Success really depends on what you're looking for. Traditional fans will likely love the experience. Puzzles are fun, combat is intense, enemies feel unrelenting and there is a need to explore if you want to stay alive. Anyone hoping for a more intense run and gun adventure will likely be disappointed. There are absolutely some great moments, just questionable design choices and a rough opening prevent it from being perfect.

Resident Evil Village is a crown jewel in this ever-evolving series. The developers have combined elements from the two most prominent installments – 4 and 7 and added lots of new, interesting ideas. Then, they topped all this with a thick sauce of fantastic art direction and, behold! We got one of the best Resident Evil games and survival horrors in general.

Resident Evil Village raises the bar ever so slightly, but just enough for Capcom to maintain its grip in AAA survival horror experiences. For players, it might be hard to loosen their hands from the controller.

After the too close for comfort clash with the Baker family in Louisana, Resident Evil Village attempts to match that creepy tone and do more. Much more. As a result, this tale has facets of methodical horror combined with the ridiculous action of Resident Evil 5 or 6. While some players may not enjoy one or the other, undeniably Capcom does both very well. A better mix of the survival horror and extreme action could have made this stronger overall, as the messy pacing, lacking antagonist development, and easing difficulty hurt the overall adventure. The final package is still a wonderful spectacle of a video game. It’s entertaining, it’s engrossing, and it’s Resident Evil in every aspect. With the best visual/audio design in the series’ and a satisfying Metroidvania world design, Resident Evil Village is unmissable.

undefined. For all the game's problems, though, it provides some truly excellent moments that I'll remember for a long time. I shouldn't be shocked that a major AAA game like Village would fall into AAA traps, but there's something special about Village that felt like it could escape the franchise's own sordid past and deliver something as revolutionary-if not more-than RE7. But, like all things camp, maybe we'll reevaluate the game's banality in a decade or two; Village might be a cult oddity in good time.

The franchise's first-person foundation is beefed up in some areas but weakened in many more.

Resident Evil Village is a great entry into the otherwise weird third trilogy of the Resident Evil franchise. Taking a lot of what made Resident Evil 7 work as a great horror experience and adding to it with things that people enjoyed about Resident Evil 4. However, Resident Evil Village does feel like by adding things from Resident Evil 4, that CAPCOM is about to remake some mistakes of old.

While Resident Evil Village channels the best bits of several Resident Evil games, it stands on its own to be something never done before in the franchise. A macabre potpourri of European, gothic inspired styles of tension and horror, Resident Evil Village is a worthy follow-up to Resident Evil 7: biohazard and one that any self-respecting horror fan shouldn't miss.

Resident Evil Village VR is a must-have title for anyone taking the plunge on PSVR2. It's still the same RE8 we know, and love but with the tension turned up to 11. In short, it's the best way to play one of 2021's best games.

An audacious and ambitious game that ranks among the best of the series, even if it's a touch inharmonious.

Resident Evil has been on a hot streak with 7 and the remakes of the second and third games. Village is out now, and the bar is set mighty high. With the franchise having a wide range that it offers its fans, from more action-oriented entries to more horror-focused, which will this fall into? Also, how will it stack up to the recent top-notch entries?

Not to suggest your rendezvous with the Lady of the Castle isn't one to savour, or even tremble at, it's just that most of the released media and tone for Village has been centred around her and a bit of the village, but what they wholly amount for in the full product is essentially tutorial content, at best.

Resident Evil Village is an instant classic, a solid basis for the franchise's future and the perfect mixture between the beloved game structure of Resident Evil 4 and the modern take on franchise reinvented by Resident Evil 7.

Resident Evil Village expands the pared-back, first-person gameplay of Resident Evil 7 into a more ambitious and over-the-top survival horror experience. Greater variety and more mechanical depth prove that there's a lot of potential left to explore in this new approach to the series, but some elements are a bit uneven, and you may find yourself missing the simplicity of the Baker ranch.

Resident Evil Village has some of the biggest scares in the series to date, but it also has a peculiar feel to it, like a lot of story and gameplay was chopped out before launch.

Resident Evil Village is a far cry from its more grounded and horror-focused predecessor, but in the end, it’s perhaps just as lovable. At times it feels like a greatest hits collection of some of the best elements of previous Resident Evil games, and while that leads to it not being wholly coherent, it’s not to its detriment. It may not be perfect in terms of combat mechanics and storytelling, but Resident Evil Village keeps you on your toes, with you never truly knowing what’s waiting for you around the next corner. And that’s why when playing it, the hours simply fly by. Will the series ever become stale? Not while it’s being as inventive as this, that’s for sure.

Village isn’t quite as elegant a revival; its Doom vision doesn’t suit frantic warfare as well as it did the old-school hiding and running of RE7, and there are times when a player might wish that the camera would drop behind the shoulder again, completing the RE4 effect. But this is still a fast-paced, addictive, and gorgeously immersive addition to Capcom’s undying series. And for one tense, inspired detour—an unarmed ramble through a haunted house, adding some Conjuring energy to the grab bag of genre tricks—the game finds an angle Resident Evil never has. You may think you’ve seen every unspeakable monster these games have to throw at you. Baby, think again.
