Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a great game thanks to its impressive combat system. The real star of the show however is the lively world that keeps you entertained throughout. Even though the Switch might not capable of the prettiest graphics, the game still looks great. It comes with a price however as the framerate is not that good.

MONSTER HUNTER STORIES 2 presented a fun and beautiful fighting system and a fascinating world with a very nice cartoonish drawing. Its biggest drawback was the repetition of discovery areas, trenches and online, but all of this did not prevent me from enjoying it, as it gave me a very nice experience as a fan of the series, and the addition of new content each month is keeping things fresh.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin have one of the most in-depth and exciting monster breeding system ever made, but sadly it comes with rather archaic narrative and boring combat encounters.

Though intimidating, the Monster Hunter series has always had a beautiful world to explore with many creative monsters to hunt. Now, with Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, it’s more accessible than ever before. With an excellent combat system and a fun variety of monsties to tame, you can spend hundreds of hours in this world. If you’ve always been interested in Monster Hunter but felt overwhelmed by its multitude of mechanics, then this is a great entry point to the series. If you’re a veteran who’s been playing since day one, then the similarities between the turn based combat and regular combat will bring you a familiar sense of joy.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 certainly isn’t a perfect game, the story is paced awkwardly, the voice acting is dry and it’s mostly a stripped-back Monster Hunter experience that not every Monster Hunter fan will want to play. Where Monster Hunter truly succeeds is in making the combat captivating, the story charming and the monsties fun to collect and manage. If you’re both a Monster Hunter fan and a JRPG fan, or just someone looking to scratch that Pokemon itch, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is just the game you’re looking for.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin  is a very detailed RPG that manages to take advantage of the fundamental elements of the series to create a captivating experience. Without a doubt, it is one of the best titles available on the market, especially when it comes to games focused on capturing creatures.

I’m pretty impressed with Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. It has a great storyline, excellent voice acting, lots and lots of areas to explore and gather items in. The monsties are a delight to see going about their business in the open world. Combat is interesting and a lot of fun to take part in. If you are a fan of the Monster Hunter series then this is a very entertaining adventure RPG that is extremely enjoyable to play. But even if you aren’t into the main Monster Hunter series then you will find Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin to be different. This is an excellent game to sink your teeth in!

While it’s your typical ‘Monster Hunter’ game, you can also tame and ride them all while enjoying this adventure RPG. The battle system is turn based and the intensity that the original Monster Hunter had has been well translated into this iteration as well. While there is a keyword of ‘Stories’ in the game’s title, it was a little ironic that the characters weren’t highlighted as much which made it feel awkward to focus on the story itself.

Despite my gripes with the narrative and framerate, Monster Hunter Stories 2 is an exhilarating ride from start to finish. I had a blast getting lost in its addictive combat, collection, and customization systems and appreciating its wondrous visual style. Whether you want to collect Monsties or battle them, or if this is your first or fifth foray into Monster Hunter, you’d be remiss to overlook Monster Hunter Stories 2. Regardless of whether it dethrones Pokémon as the king of monster collecting games, you’ll find it injects welcome innovation into the subgenre and stands on its own merits as an RPG well worth your time.

Overall, Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a fine game. It does nothing offensive while still having some great mechanics thrown in. The story is decent, the combat is fun, but can get a little long in the tooth and the overall progression system was fine albeit a bit one note after a while. Monster Hunter fans can have a fun time with it while old school RPG fans will get more out of the mechanics of the combat mixed with the rite of channeling that can really get the maximum stat boosts going. It has it’s pacing issues here and there with the combat and the quest progression, but overall, these are minor compared to the sheer amount of things you can do while still raising the best team of Monsties you can make.

Despite the cliché story scenario, the game does have its surprising moments that can get you emotional rather quickly. At the end of the day, I believe Wings of Ruin's lighthearted narrative is perfectly suited for a Monster Hunter game that's all about hatching monsters to help you hunt the same monsters.

The whole adventure is a massive mountain to climb and that's without all the extra content. There are elements within the game that can feel overwhelming, but like other Monster Hunter games, players will only be rewarded by the amount they put into the game. There are some performance issues but that doesn't take away that much from the overall experience. Even though this may not be the Monster Hunter players are familiar with, it's a great game that Capcom has amazingly re-envisioned to bring a new audience.
