Riders Republic misses its chance to be a great game due to some of its lacks in customization and gameplay. An extremely fun game that anyone who loves extreme sports should try.

Riders Republic lets you play how you want, when you want, at whatever pace you choose. Since our gaming habits tend to vary from time to time, that is an amazing approach. Riders Republic is a throwback for the modern gaming world, and it's one that can be picked up and enjoyed today, next week, next month, or next year. Ubisoft took what Steep started and made something even more worthwhile this time around.

Ubisoft developers have used all the things they learned from their previous extreme sports title and made a bigger and more exciting video game. There are of course the usual "Ubisoft Formula" problems but if you get in the right groove with how things work in Riders Republic, you are going to have great times with it.

Riders Republic isn't the only game focused on extreme sports. The predecessor STEEP is about skiing, and there is a more hardcore Descenders for cycling. While the experience of Riders Republic is not unique, overall the performance of this game is commendable and impressive.

While it has promise, Riders Republic feels like it needs a bit more time in the oven. For fans of extreme sports, there's certainly something to enjoy here – just don't be surprised when a variety of issues run the experience into the ground.

Anyone that has played Ubisoft’s past decade of output will find much of Riders Republic to be incredibly familiar despite it technically being a new franchise. It does do many things better than its spiritual predecessor, as the controls and user interface are much more welcoming than Steep‘s, but it doesn’t push the extreme sports genre forward or in any interesting directions.

What Riders Republic lacks in depth, it more than makes up for in variety.

A sports bike has two wheels, and wisely, instead of trying to reinvent those, Riders Republic provides players with iconic courses on which to ride its perfectly tuned bikes—and skis and jetpacks to boot. If anything, the developers at Ubisoft Annecy have gone to admirable lengths to make sure that nothing mechanically gets in the way of that fun. How odd, then, that so much of Riders Republic’s gameplay ends up bogged down under onerous checklists and thankless grinds that are the very antithesis of the game’s YOLO mentality.

It's not the prettiest game, with distant scenery lacking detail, low-res cinematics, and screen tearing in busy areas. But the dizzying scale of the world, and the complete lack of loading times, is technically impressive. It's also worth noting that you need to be online to experience the career mode and progression—otherwise you're stuck with the freeform, rather empty Zen Mode. Most people play games online these days, but if you can't for whatever reason, your options will be limited. It's frustrating, because the actual riding in Riders Republic is heaps of fun. It's just been packaged in a completely off-putting way. You'll have to decide if the cringe is worth putting up with.

Riders Republic is on balance a Steep on steroids. The latest effort of Ubisoft Annecy is a huge playground available to the player and in which you can have fun both in a carefree way and in a more serious way thanks to the total freedom of approach and the countless customizations of the control system.

With how the current controls and gameplay loop sit, though, I can’t find myself wanting to sit down and play this much longer after its release. Here is to hoping Ubisoft and Riders Republic get even more extreme in the future.

Riders Republic is a game players can effortlessly lose themselves in, even if the gameplay itself is pretty shallow. The endless barrage of events populating the world map become less exciting over time, resembling a shopping list rather than milestones in your ascension to extreme sports godhood. If you're still keen to take the plunge, make sure you have a posse ready to party up with.

Riders Republic tries to improve the Steep formula on many levels, but sometimes fails to really find its own way : by constantly solliciting the players with its trials, rewards, gears, modes and extras, Ubisoft Annecy's new formula sometimes forgets to let us enjoy the ride and its vast landscape.

Riders Republic is a high-octane ode to joy. An almost perfect extreme sports theme-park open world where having fun is the only thing that matters. Despite a confusing progression and some little hiccups camera and controlwise, Ubisoft Annecy brought in the best part of Steep, The Crew 2 and a bit of punk attitude to create a versatile and compelling experience, even if sometimes a bit too much overwhelming.

Riders Republic contains a beautiful, expansive playground of the likes we’ve not seen before in an extreme sports title. Its ability to combine real-world locations, equipment, and tricks, with an over-the-top, “just go crazy and have fun” demeanor is truly a joy.
