Far more damning is the fact that The Quarry, though happily thronged with beasts, is barren of scares.

While I love the formula Supermassive has created, I don’t think they have quite perfected it yet. But just as they’re closing in on the uncanny valley, they are also closing in on the perfect horror game.

The Quarry is a thrilling-ish monster-movie in game form. The charismatic characters and tropey twists get this loose series of games back on a fun, classic horror trope track - with a bit of gore thrown in.

The Quarry has blockbuster aspirations but never quite manages to rise above B-movie cheese. However, it’s still a well-structured interactive horror experience with a cast of mostly likable characters and a couple of highly effective twists.

The Quarry is a tense horror adventure with incredibly likable characters and some effective scares. The central mystery is fun to figure out, and the game doesn't take itself too seriously. While there are a few hiccups, you can either work around them or ignore them as they're not so major as to detract from the overall experience. This is Supermassive's best work yet.

Supermassive's The Quarry is one of the best games from the developer since Until Dawn, but it still has some recurring issues from previous titles.

You will probably leave with several favourite characters, having glimpsed their lives beyond that one night of supernatural threats. You’re never left in doubt about what the threat actually is, and that only serves to prove that classic monster and ghost stories still work despite all their tropes, or indeed precisely because of them. The Quarry’s charming writing and cinematic presentation make it an engrossing horror caper – even if this is, paradoxically, a game that’s often at its best when you’re not actively playing it.

Interactive slasher specialists Supermassive return with a creepy, if patchy, summer camp chiller

The Quarry is an excellent survival horror experience with a strong cast of characters and a startling horror narrative that delights with campy scares and unexpected twists. Fans of Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures need to pick this up, or even those after a spooky outing either alone or with friends. It isn’t the alien abduction story I’ve been waiting for, but it still proves that Supermassive Games is the undisputed king of the genre when it matters.

Those who have enjoyed prior Supermassive titles will find a lot to love in The Quarry. The developer has refined its interactive storytelling skills and the game really goes to town with the butterfly effect gameplay, while managing to be a stellar spookfest at the same time. Horror lovers looking for a creepy night in will also be well served by The Quarry, and with plenty of endings and story permutations, it could be a solid weekend binge for genre aficionados.

The Quarry is yet another impressive title by Supermassive Games. While it doesn't veer away from their previous titles, their ability to write an interesting story with compelling characters is only improving. Featuring several red herrings and twists, The Quarry will keep you guessing and gives you an ever-increasing impact on how the story turns out. There are still a few niggles here and there, such as the sloth-like character movement and a few facial animation and audio quirks, but this looks better than ever and features an excellent soundtrack. If you're a fan of Until Dawn or The Dark Pictures games, you'll like this; particularly as the larger budget comes with a much bigger cast and a much larger and more branching story.

The Quarry is a significant evolution of the formula established with Until Dawn. This time around the performance capture, cinematography and complex branching story are even more impressive. The game’s biggest achievement, though, are its setting, narrative and characters. While they don’t entirely transcend the stock tropes of genre fiction, they are far and away some of the best in any videogame and absolutely the equal of big-budget horror films. The Quarry is a must-play for horror fans. Gamers who enjoy great narratives, memorable characters and intriguing choice-driven mechanics will love it too.

For everything The Quarry does right, it has just as many glaring issues or niggling problems to bring it right back down to Earth. Supermassive Games has been trying to better Until Dawn for seven years now, and at this point, it looks like it's never, ever going to happen. The Quarry is just a bit dull, and that's the exact opposite of what these types of titles strive to be.

The Quarry is still filled to the brim with thrills, tough choices, and brutal deaths. Unfortunately, it still suffers from the same pitfalls that have plagued past titles. It's worsened by poorly written character relationships and a rather unsatisfying ending.

The Quarry is a worthy heir to Until Dawn. It's a classic teen horror, with a good amount of high-tension moments and an impressive number of branches that will push the most curious to return multiple times to Hackett's Quarry in search of the truth, dodging death on their own or with a group of friends.

The Quarry is a pulse-pounding teen slasher packed with strong characterisation, amazing atmosphere, and scrumptious visuals. Yes, it's not exactly the most challenging game thanks to dumbed down QTE events and interactions, but with a great story and heaps of replay value, you won't really care. If you're a fan of Until Dawn, then this is a must-have.

Aside from the small issues I had, one of which made me upset, I still enjoyed my time with the game. So much that I played halfway through it, stopped, convinced my wife to join me since she liked Until Dawn, and then played through it again. Oh, and my wife and I are wanting to play through it again to try out the opposite decisions. I still find Until Dawn an overall better experience, but The Quarry is a fun time especially with some friends arguing what we need to do in a situation.

As a fan of Supermassive's other games I was really excited for this one, hoping it would be as good as Until Dawn, but after I finished it I just felt disappointed, especially with the abrupt ending and bad writing that made me not even want to try another playthrough to see how else the story could have played out.

The Quarry is certainly an excellent vintage for lovers of narrative games with irreversible consequences and sometimes... Brutal. The characters are convincing, endearing and the actors fully embodied.

If you loved Until Dawn and Dark Pictures Anthology, you will adore this title. If you've never played these but you're into horror movies you certainly won't be disappointed, as it delivers exactly what you'd expect - Tension, thrills, jumpscares, and the periodic deaths of fundamentally annoying yet somehow lovable teenagers as they hit "rock" bottom.
