Far more damning is the fact that The Quarry, though happily thronged with beasts, is barren of scares.

The Quarry is a good piece of cinematography and storytelling, lost in its medium of choice. The gameplay elements aren't particularly fun, nor worthwhile replaying. The cutscenes are good the first time around, but certainly get a bit grating the longer the game goes on. Standout performances from the actors certainly carry The Quarry, and it is worthwhile playing through the story at least once, but the second time around feels too much of a chore. The Quarry is the definition of a weekend rental.

We may not have been enjoying it the way Supermassive intended, but that made the experience that much better. I'm thankful that summer camp is over, but I will hold a piece of Hackett's Quarry in my heart for at least a week. It's the slogan of the camp, after all: "What doesn't kill you will make you stronger.

For everything The Quarry does right, it has just as many glaring issues or niggling problems to bring it right back down to Earth. Supermassive Games has been trying to better Until Dawn for seven years now, and at this point, it looks like it's never, ever going to happen. The Quarry is just a bit dull, and that's the exact opposite of what these types of titles strive to be.

Generally these games have a ton of replay value given the various outcomes you can have but between the languid pacing and the frustrating lack option to skip dialogue or cutscenes it made the prospect of doing it all over one that I wasn’t interested in. There is a chapter select available once you’ve completed the game and a death rewind feature that allows you to basically use three lives per chapter to take back a death of a character which is cool, I guess. With Until Dawn Supermassive proved they know how to tell a good story with somewhat interesting characters and good pacing, which is all the more disappointing that their first proper follow up, The Quarry, comes up short on so many levels.Generally these games have a ton of replay value given the various outcomes you can have but between the languid pacing and the frustrating lack option to skip dialogue or cutscenes it made the prospect of doing it all over one that I wasn’t interested in. While The Quarry is by all means a decent game, it embraces being Until Dawn's shadow instead trying to step out of it.

"A game built on the message that your choices matter, The Quarry does very little to prove this design principle in execution. It’s a grand attempt at recapturing the magic of the developer’s cult 2015 hit Until Dawn, but rather than demonstrate growth for Supermassive, The Quarry makes it feel like the studio is trapped in the past. In this case, it’s an overemphasis on pulpy B-horror movies from the ‘80s."

For those who’ve been patiently waiting for an up-to-par follow-up to the immensely popular Until Dawn, The Quarry might not be it. While its immersive gameplay and dynamic characters are enough to carry the majority of the game, the title is a narrative adventure with no resolutions for its heroes. A post-credits scene revealing how The Quarry survivors escaped - and what came next - or even just a reunion between the friends after their ordeal would have gone a long way in saving what ended up to be a disappointment. While The Quarry is an impressive graphical showcase of new-gen possibilities, it seems that in terms of story, players will have to continue waiting for a true successor to Until Dawn.

An impressive technical achievement and in the right conditions an entertaining movie experience, but it's both a horror film that's not scary and a video game that's barely interactive.

A fun but poorly paced horror adventure that's both slow to start and over too fast

I’m a bit divided when it comes to recommending The Quarry. It is a good interactive film that is worth experiencing at least once. It has a couple of significant drawbacks that keep it from truly shining, but it’s a great interactive movie that those who loved Until Dawn will appreciate.

It still has an enjoyable enough narrative with likable characters and a decent mystery, but the ways in which it tells that tale are limited by the restrictive, overly familiar choice systems and inconsistent animation.

As a fan of Supermassive's other games I was really excited for this one, hoping it would be as good as Until Dawn, but after I finished it I just felt disappointed, especially with the abrupt ending and bad writing that made me not even want to try another playthrough to see how else the story could have played out.

The performance is really good, the music matches the action quite well, and generally The Quarry leaves a very good feeling when the end credits roll.

In many ways, The Quarry is just as good as Until Dawn, which is a solid 8/10 in this reviewer’s eyes. However, the lack of narrative depth and meaningful choices, the annoying graphical glitches mentioned and a surprising lack of ways to kill characters until late on, hold this back from being an outstanding offering in this genre.

The Quarry has made its game complete with movie-like diverse character casts and technical achievements to be as immersive as possible. If you’re into gore and blood pouring horror themed stories, this would be your go to game. But with a dragging build up and dispirited sunrise after a long night of darkness may end up a little futile in the end.

The Quarry takes you to Hackett's Quarry where a number of young camp leaders must try to survive the night. The necessary horror clichés fly around your ears and you can make many choices to let the group survive or not. Still, the game gives you the feeling that sometimes it doesn't matter which choice you make, because the most important choice is made at the end. It is only important to know who is and who is not still alive at that moment. Despite some minor glitches, The Quarry is a fun game to play with friends, on the couch or online in a couple of weeks.

The Quarry could have been a great game with its cast and interesting storyline. Unfortunately, it will be remembered as an average Supermassive game due to its inability to adjust the pace of the story, too weak playable parts and not completing the story properly.

The Quarry's pacing can be a tad slow, but it is short enough not to overstay its welcome before getting to a more tense pace. But the tension was not transferred onto the gameplay where choices acted as more of a respite during these hectic scenarios. Still, despite some questionable moments, it is pretty engaging game with a high replay value.
