A glitzy Wolverine game with a fun and violent fighting system, and some stealth, that is let down by too much hand holding and not enough faith in the player.

Marvel’s Wolverine delivers a brutal, visually spectacular take on Logan with a compelling story, but its overly guided structure, limited exploration, and repetitive enemies make the experience feel much more restrictive than it should.

Marvel's Wolverine captures Logan's brutal physicality with real conviction, but plays it too safe everywhere else, delivering a solid superhero adventure that never quite matches the ambition of Insomniac's best work.

With fun and gory combat, along with a compelling story, Wolverine is unfortunately undone by how repetitive and one note it is.

It’s been a long time coming for Wolverine’s latest solo adventure from the same studio that made the highly successful Spider-Man games, but it has finally arrived. It may not be a Game of the Year contender, but it is still an action-packed adventure with a gripping and emotional story. The claws are finally out, and they are thirsty for blood in Marvel’s Wolverine!

Marvel's Wolverine hits the mark in areas where Insomniac already excels: top-tier presentation, strong performances, and brutal combat that effectively captures the character's rage. The problem is that, as a game, the experience simply fails to evolve. Combat that impresses in the opening hour repeats with little variation right up to the end credits; exploration is rendered hollow by the protagonist's own heightened senses; and stealth segments feel like an underutilized add-on. Factor in an unusual number of bugs for a Sony exclusive, and the result is a title that delivers less of a game than its price tag and the Wolverine name promise.

Insomniac Games deserves a pat on the back. Why? Because they somehow took an interesting comic character like Wolverine and put him in the most standard and milquetoast game ever imaginable.

"A thrilling experience worthy of Wolverine" Marvel’s Wolverine delivers a powerful, polished action experience that succeeds—above all—in making the player feel like they are truly in control of Wolverine, thanks to visceral combat, excellent performance, impressive visuals, and outstanding technical execution. However, repetitive encounters and limitations regarding exploration and progression depth prevent it from reaching the level of a masterpiece. Nevertheless, it remains one of the best video game portrayals of the Wolverine character.

Marvel's Wolverine's slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay.

Wolverine's characterisation is a bright spot in this otherwise underwhelming, old-school romp that reminds us how far action games have come.

Marvel’s Wolverine gets its claws in deep with a memorable, emotional, and high-stakes story, wonderful interpretations of Logan, Jean, and the rest of the cast, and brutally satisfying combat that distils the core of the character down to every snikt and claw pop.

At best, it’s a fun but forgettable experience that’ll entertain you for a few hours. At worst, it shows that just because you can make really good superhero games with one character, that doesn’t mean you can make really good superhero games with any character.

Wolverine is a game with momentary sparks of fun, but its mostly-good combat getting constantly dragged down by mediocre storytelling, poor pacing, and an underwhelming amount of player agency left me very bored far too often.

Marvel's Wolverine is an absolute triumph in nearly every category, doing for the character what Marvel's Spider-Man did for Spider-Man.

Marvel's Wolverine is a slickly presented superhero romp that casts players as the iconic mutant. Combat is extremely violent, as the character demands, but also highly repetitive. At least the enjoyable (if predictable) original comic book story offers motivation to continue. Check Amazon Check Best Buy

That said, we're not going to "turn a blind eye" to Marvel: Wolverine: it's a great action-adventure that's well worth sinking your claws into this season... baby.

Marvel's Wolverine carves out its slot in a packed year for single-player adventures. The comparisons back to Insomniac's previous work are inevitable, and it's true that Wolverine's blood-soaked combat can feel more restrained and limited, but this globetrotting odyssey never outstays its welcome and sets the foundation for what could be a stone cold killer of a sequel.

It’s a bit of a shame that Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t able to crawl out from under the shadow of its spiritual predecessors. It certainly leans into the brutal, frenetic nature of its hero, and when it’s firing on all cylinders, it offers up some of the best, most action-packed moments we’ve seen this year. If it were a more confident game, it would cut out some of its hand-me-downs in favor of a leaner, more focused experience, but as it stands, players will have to learn to take the old with the new.
