Halloween: The Game resurrects the asymmetrical horror gameplay of Friday the 13th, while carving out its own franchise identity. A campaign mode offers a short, sweet Halloween treat. But the multiplayer is a bit of a mixed bag. Still, its bold stab at prioritizing NPC rescue over player survival mostly slices through the competition.

Illfonic has created a solid foundation for an asymmetrical horror game. It addresses some of the worst offenses committed by Dead by Daylight, and rewards more immersive playstyles. It actually brings the horror back to the genre which has been optimized out of its competitor. Now it’s up to the players to do something with it.

Halloween: The Game has an intriguing premise, but unfortunately, it fails to fully realize its potential. Turning Michael Myers into the centerpiece of an asymmetrical horror game is a solid idea, and Haddonfield’s atmosphere, the overall chase sequences, and certain gameplay moments can be enjoyable for Halloween fans. However, poor tutorials, a weak progression system, a lack of gameplay variety, matchmaking issues, and a range of technical and graphical problems prevent the game from becoming a truly memorable multiplayer experience.

Halloween: The Game takes full advantage of the best features of the top titles in the asymmetric multiplayer horror genre, but manages to create its own identity, something that other similar games have failed to achieve. The option for a single-player gameplay in a short but very rewarding campaign is a great advantage. The overall package isn't perfect in what it sets out to do because it suffers in some general aspects, including chaotic AI, technical instability, and graphical limitations.

*Halloween: The Game* is an asymmetrical horror title that treats Carpenter’s film with respect and passion. Its greatest strengths lie in its atmosphere, sound design, and the sense of being stalked by Michael Myers, though an overly short campaign, technical issues, and a degree of long-term repetitiveness prevent it from reaching greater heights. Nevertheless, it remains an entertaining and recommended title for fans of the genre and the *Halloween* franchise—especially when played with a group of friends ready to scream and laugh together.

Halloween: The Game is a much smarter adaptation than simply relying on Michael Myers’ iconic image. It understands the horror of the original film, transforms many of its ideas into gameplay mechanics, and manages to establish its own identity within the asymmetrical horror genre. It lacks polish and relies too heavily on multiplayer, but there is a very solid foundation here and, most importantly, an adaptation made by people who seem to understand why Michael Myers remains terrifying nearly fifty years later.

Halloween is a solid asymmetric horror game buried under a pile of technical issues and general sloppiness. One day it might be worth playing, but right now it’s absolutely not.

Halloween: The Game truly understands the fantasy it aims to deliver, whether you're controlling Michael Myers or desperately trying to survive him. The campaign is short, yet serves as an effective introduction that recreates iconic moments from the 1978 classic, while the multiplayer sets itself apart through NPCs that push the experience beyond the traditional 4v1 formula. Even while stumbling with progression bugs and shallow structural variety, the end result is a violent, entertaining slasher that delivers a solid homage to the original film.

Among the hits and misses of its previous projects, IllFonic shows with Halloween: The Game that it still has plenty to offer the asymmetric horror genre. The title emerges as one of the studio’s most complete experiences for those seeking 1v4 multiplayer matches, blending diverse mechanics, immersive atmosphere, and new strategic possibilities. Despite technical issues that still need fixing, the gameplay innovations make the experience more dynamic and engaging, creating an addictive match cycle that encourages players to experiment with different strategies as they return to Haddonfield.

Halloween: The Game delivers an entertaining asymmetrical horror experience that captures the atmosphere of the classic franchise while adding its own mechanics to the familiar formula. Its story mode offers a useful introduction to Michael Myers, while the multiplayer provides tense chases, environmental interactions and plenty of pressure for both sides. However, limited animations, repetitive actions and a lack of depth in its narrative keep it from reaching its full potential.

Halloween: The Game captures flashes of the original film’s campy slasher atmosphere through Myers’ stalking mechanics, cinematic teleportation, and satisfyingly brutal executions. Unfortunately, frustrating NPC-focused objectives, easily exploitable balance, shallow progression, poor animations, technical issues, and fundamentally repetitive match design make it feel like a weaker reskin of Friday the 13th rather than a meaningful evolution of the formula.

Halloween: The Game is the definitive game based on the cult film Halloween and the killer Michael Myers. The asymmetrical multiplayer mode is great fun and offers plenty of options. Meanwhile, the inclusion of a story mode where you play as Myers will delight fans of the slasher genre and John Carpenter’s cult film. The slow pace of the game, which mirrors that of the film, may not be to everyone’s taste, but once you get into the swing of things, we can guarantee that the game is addictive and you’ll want to play one match after another.

Halloween offers a unique, asymmetrical, horror experience. It captures the essence of Halloween well, and while optimization and longevity are concerns, it's an experience that horror fans will enjoy.

IllFonic deserves some props for trying to do things differently but the incessant focus on interacting with NPCs undermines what should be a frantic time with other players.

Slasher fans will absolutely love the fantastic movie atmosphere, the great soundtrack, and the generous fan service. The switch between Michael and the townspeople also brings a breath of fresh air. On the other hand, sluggish movement, gameplay that quickly becomes monotonous, and annoying animation glitches during the manhunt in solo mode detract from the fun. PC players are also held back by clunky controls. While it’s worth a look for die-hard Michael Myers enthusiasts, the technical shortcomings mean you rarely feel like a powerful boogeyman.

Unfortunately, the game currently suffers from a huge number of technical problems. Performance is far from smooth, and matchmaking proves struggling as well. Hopefully the devs will address these issues over the coming weeks. Then the game will deserve a better grade.

Halloween: The Game doesn’t feel like two separate games thankfully. However it does feel like so much more time went into embodying and becoming one with Michael and not the rest of the cast. There is something really great here, but there’s just a little bit more polish to come that will really make this a killer success. As a note, when provided with a copy for review, we were made aware of a few additional fixes and features that would be available by launch day. Some of these will really bring it home and make it a fuller experience.

It’s a tough one to answer, especially in a genre where a pattern of dead match queues after short-term success is the common narrative. I can’t speak on that future, but what I can say is right now Halloween needs work: on its match pacing, its learning curve, its gameplay mechanics, and crucially…its bevy of technical issues. There remains potential for a solid multiplayer horror title here, and the IP and visuals might be enough to convince some, but as of right now, Halloween is not an easy title to recommend to all but die-hard fans of the genre.

Halloween: The Game has its rough patches, but it’s a good enough time for fans of Michael Myers and asymmetrical horror games. My time with it was bogged down by numerous bugs and really dumb AI characters, but when the game ran as it was supposed to, it was a fun horror experience of cat-and-mouse between killer and survivor. Adding some new elements like the additional citizens that you need to save or Michael’s various abilities keeps things interesting, but I do worry about there being a ceiling for this game’s future when compared to past Illfonic and Gun titles.
