Halloween: The Game resurrects the asymmetrical horror gameplay of Friday the 13th, while carving out its own franchise identity. A campaign mode offers a short, sweet Halloween treat. But the multiplayer is a bit of a mixed bag. Still, its bold stab at prioritizing NPC rescue over player survival mostly slices through the competition.

Unfortunately, the game currently suffers from a huge number of technical problems. Performance is far from smooth, and matchmaking proves struggling as well. Hopefully the devs will address these issues over the coming weeks. Then the game will deserve a better grade.
Halloween: The Game doesn’t feel like two separate games thankfully. However it does feel like so much more time went into embodying and becoming one with Michael and not the rest of the cast. There is something really great here, but there’s just a little bit more polish to come that will really make this a killer success. As a note, when provided with a copy for review, we were made aware of a few additional fixes and features that would be available by launch day. Some of these will really bring it home and make it a fuller experience.
It’s a tough one to answer, especially in a genre where a pattern of dead match queues after short-term success is the common narrative. I can’t speak on that future, but what I can say is right now Halloween needs work: on its match pacing, its learning curve, its gameplay mechanics, and crucially…its bevy of technical issues. There remains potential for a solid multiplayer horror title here, and the IP and visuals might be enough to convince some, but as of right now, Halloween is not an easy title to recommend to all but die-hard fans of the genre.
Halloween: The Game has its rough patches, but it’s a good enough time for fans of Michael Myers and asymmetrical horror games. My time with it was bogged down by numerous bugs and really dumb AI characters, but when the game ran as it was supposed to, it was a fun horror experience of cat-and-mouse between killer and survivor. Adding some new elements like the additional citizens that you need to save or Michael’s various abilities keeps things interesting, but I do worry about there being a ceiling for this game’s future when compared to past Illfonic and Gun titles.
Halloween is a nostalgic dive for fans of the franchise and IllFonic’s 4v1 asymmetrical survival horror. Recreating the familiarity of now-lost titles isn't enough to justify the slew of technical and mechanical issues that plague this entry.
