The choice to rely on "bricks" makes the gameplay and technical structure more manageable, while the artistic direction may not be to everyone's taste. However, if you love Pokémon and want to immerse yourself in a simple and satisfying experience, you'll discover that Pokopia is much more than a hybrid between Animal Crossing and Minecraft.

Simply put, Pokémon Pokopia is one of Pokémon's best spin-offs yet. It effortlessly combines the charm of Animal Crossing and Minecraft while imbuing the end result with all the best elements of monster catching. Regardless of whether you're a fan of Animal Crossing, Pokémon, Dragon Quest Builders, or are just looking to jump into something new, Pokopia will hook you in and keep you coming back for weeks.

Despite how much I’ve played the main games in both Animal Crossing and Pokémon since the early/mid-2000s, I didn’t expect that both of Nintendo’s biggest time-sink franchises would meld together so well, and yet Pokémon Pokopia has just blasted off straight to the top of my list of favourite cozy games.

Pokémon Pokopia is a bold experiment that successfully blends multiple genres, resulting in a title with a very strong identity. While the main series has always been fueled by collecting and battling, here collecting remains, but combat gives way to management and reconstruction. There's no pressure. No performance anxiety. There's a world to rebuild patiently, one micro-habitat at a time.

Pokémon Pokopia could well be the Animal Crossing of Nintendo Switch 2. A familiar world that needs rejuvenation, brimming with potential and a cast of colourful favourites to join the ride. Pokopia has a surprising amount of depth, encouraging both exploration and more structured missions to keep the fun flowing. With almost boundless craft and customisation, the game highlights the strength of the hardware - a technical showcase of a world that rarely stutters, if at all. As a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, Pokémon Pokopia has the potential to become a system seller; a cosy essential with a sprinkling of Pokémon nostalgia.

A cozy and lively lifesim that sheds a different light on the series while also being geared towards everyone who enjoys Animal Crossing or Dragon Quest Builders. Less grind and better QoL features would've made for a smoother experience, though.

Pokemon Pokopia is a surprisingly addictive spin-off that focuses on exploration, habitat building, and developing your own living Pokemon community instead of combat. The most fun comes from experimenting with ‘recipes’ for new environments, crafting, and terraforming, although over time the grind and the demands imposed by the tasks become more noticeable. If you're looking for a peaceful game in the style of Animal Crossing + Minecraft with a Pokémon skin, you've come to the right place – but you have to accept that it's a completely different experience than the classic instalments of the series.

Pokémon Pokopia is easily one of the most refreshing entries the series has seen in a long time. By shifting the focus toward construction and living alongside your Pokémon, it turns the traditional formula into something incredibly mellow and absorbing. Thanks to its solid mechanics and top-tier presentation, it’s clear the franchise still knows how to innovate. A few systems might feel a little unpolished, but overall, it’s a standout adventure that definitely deserves your time.

Pokémon Pokopia has managed to master the life simulation genre, delivering a complete and incredibly captivating gaming experience. Despite a somewhat lengthy start where the player is held a little too hand-holding, the game truly shines once you have complete freedom to dictate your play session. Between building, completing quests, exploring, and customizing, Pokopia proves engaging and, as your adventures unfold, utterly enchanting. And if Game Freak and Koei Tecmo decide to expand the game's content in the coming months, we'll have not only one of the games of the year, but one of the games to come. A new benchmark in the life simulation genre, it's a breath of fresh air for a franchise that sometimes struggles to reinvent itself.

Pokémon Pokopia’s sound design goes well with its visual appeal. The music is both nostalgic and new, mixing Junichi Masuda's famous Kanto themes with themes from throughout the 30-year history of the series. There are CDs all over the world that players can find, which let them make their own mixes that honor Pokémon's musical history.

Warning: Pokémon Pokopia is very addictive. Although it suffers from one-note dialogue and gates your progress in real-world hours, its clever systems and gameplay loop make it one of—if not the—best spinoffs in Nintendo’s arsenal. Even dozens of hours later, I’m still surprised that somewhere between tending gardens and chasing Pokémon traces, I found rebuilding the world to be just as satisfying as conquering the Pokémon League.

Pokémon Pokopia is an excellent spin-off for the franchise. I found the vision the developer brought to our beloved monsters very interesting; an approach that suited them perfectly. All the mechanics mentioned above are what make the game excellent. I hope that, in the future, the game continues to expand and has a long lifespan. In management titles like this, it's entirely possible to extend the project's lifespan, as we saw in the case of Animal Crossing, which received updates for a long time while remaining relevant. Pokémon Pokopia is a game that both new and old fans of the franchise will love, becoming addicted to this new world of creation, revitalization, and exploration.
