I wanted to love the Remake the same way as I did the first to games of the series. In theory, everything is in place for that: Levels and alternative routes just as in the original, lightning fast action with strong setpieces. But while I enjoyed the looks and the quality of the new cutscenes at first glance, I wished just as much for some new levels or additions. And then there's the problem with the controls: how fast the crosshairs are snipping back to the center of the screen all the time.

Star Fox is a very good attempt to recreate a classic Nintendo game, but the new version reminds us that the old gameplay model doesn’t work quite as well today as it did in the ’90s. However, there’s no denying that the new Star Fox is still a solid game that offers a cinematic story and new content that fans filled with nostalgia will particularly enjoy.

Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 delivers charm and cheese in a faithful remake that's fun in quick bursts and easily replayable, though some slight changes and its older game design won't appeal to everyone.
The overall score might look much higher than the admittedly bitter tone of this review, I get it. This Star Fox remake is still a great game, as it’s still Star Fox 64. That game is timeless, so a remake of it will still be great. If you’ve never played the original, this is an absolute must-have for your Switch 2. But if you’re someone who grew up playing the original… well, there’s no other way to say it. That game oozed charisma, and this one is completely devoid of it. It might have the best graphics ever put in a Nintendo game, and it plays like a dream, but the line deliveries, slower-paced progression, and lack of new content are hard to ignore. It’s gorgeous and fun, but soulless.
Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 is a very competent remake of the Nintendo 64 title. With impressive graphics and exceptional performance, it updates the arcade experience for modern times and expands the narrative with new cutscenes, brilliantly localized and dubbed in our language. Despite the new modes, however, it remains a relatively short game.

Throughout this entire review, playing hour after hour on Corneria with the orchestral soundtrack filling the headphones and General Pepper speaking with an authoritative accent in perfect Brazilian Portuguese, Kazin kept thinking that the phrase applies to the whole game. James McCloud would be proud.

Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 brings back the classic foundation of Star Fox 64, recreating Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team’s mission against Dr. Andross in the Lylat System. The game opts for a more modern presentation, with revamped visuals, voiced dialogue, a more powerful soundtrack, new camera modes, and updated controls for the Switch 2. The campaign remains short and very familiar, but it works well thanks to its fast-paced arcade action, alternate routes, and the fun feeling of getting back into the Arwing. Battle Mode and Challenge Mode help extend the game’s longevity, even though the main experience is still clearly centered around the campaign.

Star Fox (2026) is the second remake of Star Fox 64, widely regarded as the pinnacle of the series. With enhanced visuals, more polished presentation, high-quality cutscenes, and the same satisfying shooting gameplay, it faithfully modernizes the strengths of the original. However, its familiar story and largely unchanged progression leave something to be desired. If you were hoping for the triumphant return of a legend, you may end up walking away disappointed.

Whether you’ve played the previous versions or not, you’ll have a great time. I haven’t been this excited for a potential full sequel since 1997 – surely it’s written in the stars by now!
Star Fox on the Switch 2 is certainly the definitive version of the single-player game. The controls, visuals, sounds, and overall experience are impeccable. It has quality for any enthusiast of rail shooters and aerial combat games, and fans of the original have a real treat in their hands. On the other hand, the playtime is quite limited by current standards. Four to six hours are more than enough to exhaust the campaign content.

While we haven’t had much Star Fox, this entry is the best to date. Hopefully, this spawns into something rooted in this experience without remaking Star Fox 64.
Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2 is exactly the kind of remake fans have been hoping for. It stays true to what made the Nintendo 64 classic so memorable while introducing enough visuals, audio and gameplay improvements to make it feel fresh for a new generation of gamers.
Star Fox clearly isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, and perhaps that is precisely its greatest strength. Nintendo has chosen to modernise a classic without losing the original’s identity. The gameplay remains wonderfully addictive, the alternative routes invite you to take off again and again, and technically, everything runs exceptionally smoothly on the Nintendo Switch 2. Yet it remains difficult to work with a team that offers more commentary than actual help during the missions. But every time I thought, “just one more mission”, I realised that Star Fox had gripped me all over again. And that is perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay to this remake.

Star Fox is a gorgeous and solid remake that brings this classic arcade shooter into the present.
Star Fox is another remaster of a beloved classic. Fans were undoubtedly hoping for more, but it’s still an enjoyable experience. It’s just a bit too short, especially since the multiplayer mode fails to deliver.

At the end of the day, Star Fox’s biggest strength and most fatal flaw are one in the same: It’s just Star Fox 64 again. On hand, that’s why it’s so much fun to play. It is a pretty good remake of a borderline perfect video game. But it also has to measure up to a borderline perfect video game, which it simply doesn’t in some important regards. I’m satisfied with what I’ve played, but also beyond ready for an actual new Star Fox game.
If you have never played Star Fox 64, then I highly recommend it because it is a timeless masterpiece of the genre. If you have now played the original game and are not particularly curious about this new aesthetic implementation, then it has nothing essentially new to offer you.
