Silent Hill or not, Townfall is just a mediocre horror with nice graphics and dull stealth sections.

So if we consider that the last couple of years has given us an informal Silent Hill “trilogy” with the remake of 2, Silent Hill f, and now Silent Hill: Townfall, it’s fair to say that in some ways Townfall is the most limited of the three. But you could argue that in other, important ways it’s the most well-produced and experimental, too.

Silent Hill: Townfall manages to push the series forward with some intense ideas, great gameplay mechanics and a wonderful story.

Anchored by clever puzzles, atmospheric dread, and a solid mix of stealth and action, Silent Hill: Townfall initially feels poised to deliver a survival horror classic. However, it's ultimately held back by shallow characters, a predictable story, and forgettable enemies, settling instead for a fun, if uninspired, spin-off.

Silent Hill: Townfall proves that the series’ return deserves to be taken seriously. It points to a future in which talented creators from around the world can find new ways to confront us with the horrors of our many sins. Screen Burn chose its new name to evoke the images that linger in a player’s mind long after a game is over. The Scottish studio’s latest work leaves just such an impression.

Silent Hill: Townfall is yet another unique and brilliant entry in the Silent Hill series, placing more emphasis on stealth and puzzle solving. It's the story at the heart of the game that's its biggest asset, though, keeping you wondering what exactly happened in the picturesque town of St. Amelia.

It excels at creating a beautiful yet oppressive world with inventive puzzles that contribute to world building and an interesting enough story, but the primitive stealth might turn off a lot of players before they get to the good stuff.

Silent Hill: Townfall is an enjoyable and worthwhile psychological horror experience, but it ultimately falls short as a Silent Hill game. From its weak characterization of the protagonist and the consequences this has on the overall narrative, to the inconsistencies in its mechanical approach and questionable decisions regarding how it utilizes the potential of its experience, the game constantly feels like it is struggling to find its footing. Silent Hill has always been an ambitious franchise, and even its weaker entries were willing to take considerable risks and deliver something distinctive through their unique ideas. Townfall, however, lacks much of an identity of its own. In most respects, it seems more interested in trying to look and feel like a Silent Hill game than establishing its own identity within the franchise’s established rules, structure, and framework.

Silent Hill: Townfall is a solid Silent Hill-flavored game held back mainly by being too obvious and too slow. When it hits, it hits hard, and some moments are genuinely compelling. At the same time, it occasionally stretches beyond what its mechanics can support, and the gameplay barely holds together across its roughly 10-hour runtime. It's a more consistent game than Silent Hill f, but it's also a less ambitious one, which is both a strength and a limitation. Fans of the franchise will find plenty to like, particularly those who disliked Silent Hill f's Soulslike combat and more extravagant atmosphere. For them, Townfall offers a return to form.

Townfall fits the cult horror series better than the Japanese schoolgirl adventure in Silent Hill f. It is arguably the best horror game of the year, yet simultaneously the one in the worst technical state.

An enjoyable survival horror game, but not a particularly outstanding Silent Hill. I think that’s the best way to sum up this instalment, subtitled ‘Townfall’.

After two major successes in the franchise, Silent Hill: Townfall commits to a solid horror atmosphere, impeccable sound design, and a richly detailed city, but delivers a shallow story and uncompelling characters, leaving the impression of a competent yet forgettable horror game that lacks identity next to the series' recent highs.

For veterans of older Silent Hill games, Townfall offers a new experience that perhaps isn’t completely in line with what you may come to expect. Even in the previous full-length releases, stealth wasn’t really a focus as neither James nor Hinako had any mechanics that allowed them to sneak past threats. I’m giving Silent Hill: Townfall a strong recommendation. It’s something refreshing and innovative, but without changing the core themes of what makes a Silent Hill game.

An interesting and tense survival horror game, but not perfect: the atmosphere, puzzles, and various gameplay ideas are convincing, while the plot and enemy AI have their ups and downs.

"Silent Hill Townfall" is cryptic, tense, and makes excellent use of the first-person perspective while staying true to the series. Simple combat and challenging puzzles highlight an experience that, despite its ups and downs, will leave Silent Hill fans satisfied.

SILENT HILL: Townfall is a great horror game with a gorgeously cinematic presentation and some of the most intense stealth you'll ever enjoy. 🏥

Silent Hill: Townfall successfully adapts the series to a first-person perspective, with strong environmental design, oppressive sound work, intricate puzzles, and a greater emphasis on stealth and limited resources. The CRTV mechanic gives exploration and puzzle-solving a distinct identity, while St. Amelia provides a convincing new setting for the franchise. Inconsistent enemy behavior, limited creature variety, and overly obscure puzzles can create frustration, but the game remains a technically confident and atmospheric interpretation of Silent Hill.

Silent Hill: Townfall introduced us to the Silent Hill universe from a slightly different perspective than we're used to, while still staying true to what defines the series: atmosphere and storytelling.

Born as a 'minor' game, the title developed by Screen Burn takes all the elements that distinguish the Silent Hill series and adds its own touch, such as the first-person view, giving life to a high-quality game. The story manages to keep the mystery alive until the end, while St. Amelia's setting, the psychological horror, and the use of the CRTV help give Townfall its own identity without straying from what made the series famous.

Screen Burn’s offering is the latest entry in the celebrated horror series and apart from some snags in the stealth department, it ticks all the right boxes with its well designed puzzles, gripping story and eerie atmosphere.
