A competent update to a classic that is predictably starting to show its age, best played co-operatively. A short and sweet trip down memory lane.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a well-crafted return to a classic, successfully modernizing the original campaign with improved visuals, smooth shooting, vehicles, and co-op gameplay. New missions, level selection, and modifiers add replay value, but some repetitive sections and the unchanged level design reveal the game's age. The lack of classic multiplayer is also a noticeable omission. Overall, it is a solid modernization aimed mainly at new players and longtime fans, while offering a promising first look at Halo's next-generation future.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a great opportunity to introduce impactful characters and stories to new enthusiasts and platforms, as well as deliver a fully updated experience for long-time fans. While in its best visual and technological version, and still bringing new features, the re-release suffers from dated and unimproved level design, as well as the missed opportunity for an online multiplayer experience that the title never had the chance to offer before.

All the elements that made Bungie's original Halo: Combat Evolved so incredible return, enhanced and improved by Halo Studios in Halo: Campaign Evolved. The Master Chief returns in his first adventure with improved controls, stunning visuals, new voice lines dubbed and localized into Spanish, and a better-told story. Halo looks better than ever in a remake that enhances the gameplay and lets you customize the experience down to the last detail. The ability to play solo or in online and local co-op with up to three friends rounds out a title that pays a fitting tribute to the classic and is better in every way.

A smart remake that modernizes a classic without losing its identity. Despite a few inherited flaws, Halo: Campaign Evolved remains one of the most enjoyable and engaging FPS games in recent years.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a ton of fun, but that’s mainly thanks to its excellent foundation, not the new features. While the stunning visuals do hide a few gameplay changes, those changes often weren’t even necessary. Halo Studios is afraid to make significant changes to the original, even where they might be needed. The result is a safe—and therefore unremarkable—remake of the legendary original.

Having played through Campaign Evolved now, I am left… there’s no word available besides “disappointed”.

As much as I wanted to give this game a Platinum Award, it just doesn’t deserve it in my honest opinion. This was supposed to be an easy home run for Halo Studios and Xbox Game Studios. This game was supposed to entice new players on the PS5. I’m not convinced it does much more than cater to its home base. Despite my harsh criticism, Halo: Campaign Evolved is challenging, gorgeous, fun, nostalgic, and most importantly, incredibly replayable. It is for this reason that I give Halo: Campaign Evolved The Thumb Culture Gold Award!

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a decent attempt at modernizing a precursor in the shooter genre with high-definition visuals, built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5. It respects and preserves the original vision Bungie had 25 years ago with Halo: Combat Evolved, offering engaging sci-fi storytelling and satisfying gunplay. However, it might have relied a bit too much on nostalgia, leaving out some necessary quality-of-life features required by modern players. The new content also fails to justify itself, making me wonder if its audience, whether old or new, would be completely satisfied with what’s in here.

Halo: Campaign Evolved does exactly what I hoped it would do. It brings back the original campaign without messing with the foundations too much, while making the classic moments look and play better than ever. Some cutscenes are a bit rough, and the lack of traditional multiplayer will hurt for some fans, but as a campaign remake, this really delivers. The co-op, Skulls, and new Operation: METEORITE missions give returning players a good reason to come back, while newcomers finally get a modern way to experience where Halo started.

Halo: Campaign Evolved beautifully modernises a legendary campaign with stunning visuals, fantastic gunplay, refined level design, co-op options and plenty of nostalgia. Despite the disappointing absence of competitive multiplayer, this exceptional remake demands your attention.

Halo: Campaign Evolved brings Master Chief’s first adventure to a new generation without losing the combat that made it memorable. Operation: METEORITE, Campaign Remix, modern movement, and an expanded arsenal add worthwhile reasons to return, though repetitive indoor areas and occasional frame-rate drops keep the remake from feeling completely polished.

A masterpiece. It’s not without its share of controversy due to certain decisions which, in my view, are actually the right ones. Being able to sprint, aim, use various types of weapons and explore reimagined environments is something I feel strongly works in its favour. Its art and graphics have constantly left me speechless; I’ve revelled in every single lumen and every blade of grass around me.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a visually ambitious, technically interesting remake, but it can’t replicate the most important part of the work it aims to celebrate: that extraordinary combination of shooting, sandbox, AI, and freedom that turned Combat Evolved into a masterpiece. It’s a project that proves, once again, that rebuilding a classic is far easier than truly understanding its legacy.

It's very difficult to remake a game as influential as *Halo: Combat Evolved* without falling into the trap of changing it too much or, conversely, sticking too closely to the original.

We needed only a few changes in the mechanics, but instead we got multiple changes in places, where they weren't needed. An old game in a new coat of paint that costs too much and unnecessarily changes some of its elements. That’s probably the best way to sum up Halo: Campaign Evolved.

As a standalone game, Campaign Evolved is a technically impressive and excellent FPS. But as a remake of Halo CE, many of its changes hurt the experience and prove that the original is still the better game.

Halo Campaign Evolved successfully translates the magic of Bungie's masterpiece into Unreal Engine 5, retaining its legendary gunplay while thoughtfully modernising the experience. With stunning visuals and a fantastic new prequel mini-campaign, it proves exactly why this game changed the industry 25 years ago.

While it isn’t perfect, Halo: Campaign Evolved still feels like a sizeable improvement over the Anniversary remaster while easily justifying a playthrough for fans new and old. It may stick too closely to some more frustrating aspects of Combat Evolved itself while offering some mediocre additional content, but the improvements made to tighten up the level design, amplify weapon feel, and heighten visual quality without sacrificing artistic direction are a big step in the right direction. If you’re looking for a great companion piece to the original game, Halo: Campaign Evolved is an enjoyably faithful romp from beginning to end.
