Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy could have been so much more. It could also have been so much less. It's a title that envelops you with its incredible atmosphere, flatters you with the quality of its cutscenes, enchants you with music reminiscent of Homeric myth, then after a few hours brings you back to reality with an almost too-stultifying structure.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a mystery from step one, filled with entertaining but not particularly difficult puzzles. It's a story worth experiencing.

Since 2019, Asobo Studio has been quietly honing its craft when it comes to third-person, story-orientated, action-adventure games. The A Plague Tale...

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a strong adventure that delivers a clever twist on Greek mythology rather than the games its spun off of. It combines strong combat, exploration and atmosphere with some gnarly creature encounters in a clever way, though the puzzles are uneven and the mechanics are largely derivative. Regardless, Sophia's journey is intriguing from beginning to end, making Resonance a memorable adventure even if its resemblance to the Plague Tale games are fleeting.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is the first major spinoff title for Asobo Studio, set 15 years prior to the events of A Plague Tale: Requiem.

Part-Uncharted and part-Assassin's Creed, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is an absolutely fantastic adventure. With excellent combat, bombastic set pieces, great characters, compelling storytelling, and great central mysteries, this might be the best entry in a franchise that can seemingly do no wrong.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy proves that this universe doesn’t need to belong exclusively to Amicia, Hugo or even the rats. There are other stories worth telling in this world, and if this is what Asobo can do with Sophia, then I genuinely hope the A Plague Tale Legacy name becomes an opportunity to explore even more of them.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy enshrines Asobo Studio's incredible ability to deliver emotional narratives wrought with tension and adventure. Sophia's sprawling journey is a harrowing spectacle that truly masters what makes an adventure game memorable.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a good example of an AA game, offering over a dozen hours of immersive gameplay in beautiful presentation (that music!). At times, it feels like watching an interactive film that occasionally lets you take the reins, and some of the mechanics seem a bit shoehorned in, but this is balanced out by engaging puzzles. I’m not likely to miss Sophia and her adventures, but ‘raiding’ ancient ruins was a lot of fun.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is an okay linear experience. Everything in the game is mediocre, and nothing except the visuals stands out. The writing and characters are insufferable; some scripted portions of the game, which are reduced to just walking and talking, are too long to bear, but most of the combat, puzzle, and stealth scenarios are good enough to keep you going. At the end of the day, Resonance lacks the genuine ideas and emotional depth that made the A Plague Tale series stand out from other cinematic action-adventure games.

Initially, we were a little unsure about the direction Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy was taking. But once it settles into its story, it becomes a spellbinding adventure that successfully mixes A Plague Tale and its universe with Greek mythology.

Resonance: A Plague Tale is a worthy conclusion of the saga. Even if de Rune brothers are sitting this one out, Sophia is a powerful character, but so is Leni, her sidekick. Every mechanic that made the first two A Plague Tale games likeable has been improved and refined, and that includes the general formula.

Putting you in control of a popular character from A Plague Tale: Requiem and letting you experience an important chapter of their life, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy exchanges rats and stealth for combat and puzzles, and is captivating from beginning to end. As long as you don't mind puzzles that involve reflecting light, anyhow.

By pivoting away from the gameplay that defined its predecessors, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy takes a significant gamble. The end product is an uneven experience that doesn't always hit its mark, yet the effort is far from a misstep. If anything, this new direction demonstrates that the universe has rich, untapped potential capable of thriving well beyond the tragic journey of Amicia and Hugo.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy can be considered a bold and distinctive entry in the franchise, one that steps away from the established formula of the A Plague Tale series to deliver a linear, mysterious, and action-driven spin-off. The game excels in storytelling and building suspense, the island setting is visually stunning, the music and sound design are of commendable quality, and the combat system, despite becoming somewhat repetitive and lacking in innovation, remains enjoyable for a large portion of the experience. .

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a very good addition to the series, provided you don't mind how much it differs from its predecessors. Exploration is rewarding, particularly with the new grappling hook, while the puzzles remain clever without becoming obtuse. Stealth has been heavily reduced, but the expanded combat more than makes up for it, creating an experience that feels faster and more satisfying. As before, though, the story is the real star. It's exciting and gut-wrenching even when you already know its ultimate outcome. Series fans should find plenty to enjoy, while adventure game fans have another compelling reason to give it a look.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy isn’t just a breath of fresh air for the series, demonstrating that it isn’t only dark stories set against a backdrop of real events that can be engaging. This game had all the makings of being the best instalment in the series and a worthy successor to Uncharted or Tomb Raider. However, although some of the shortcomings of its predecessors have been addressed, ultimately not everything went to plan; but given that this was something of an experiment, one can hope that for the franchise and its creators, this will be just the first of many successes to come.

While it starts out strong as a less cinematic but still stunning Uncharted line experience, the final act drags on so much with the story spilling its wheels and the stakes sequences seemingly stuck in a Groundhog Day loop, the game squanders a lot of its initial splendor towards the end.
