Truxton Extreme modernizes the classic vertical-scrolling shooter with EX BOOST, permanent Story mode upgrades, and demanding stages that make learning from your mistakes part of the fun. The repeated character paths and limited easier options hold it back somewhat, but shoot ’em up fans who enjoy learning enemy placement and improving through repetition should find a lot to like.

Truxton Extreme is a vertical shooter in the classic mode, in that you've got a powerful ship, three lives, lots of enemies, and endless ways to die.

Truxton Extreme is not only an outstanding shmup, but it also sets a new benchmark for how to bring back cult series of the genre into the current age. Very high marks on graphical effects, sound design, and soundtrack along with spot-on gameplay makes it easy to recommend adding this one to your Switch 2 library as soon as possible. Both veteran shmup players and newcomers alike will find much to enjoy in this package. You also get an outstanding digital graphic novel to go along with your game. Toaplan's legacy is in the good hands of Masahiro Yuge, and if this is the shape of things to come, I couldn't be more excited for future Tatsujin projects.

Truxton Extreme is a hardcore and intense experience that will delight old-school racers and reward the patient. All that's missing now is for someone to get a new Thunder Force and we'll be completely happy.

Truxton Extreme is about as good as a return for this series could be.

Truxton Extreme is a celebration of all things I love about Truxton. From Masahiro Yuge’s involvement on the game’s incredible soundtrack to its modern spin on shmups, there’s much to love…assuming you’re up for a good ol’ fashioned shmup challenge.

Toaplan’s classic spaceship shooter makes a triumphant return with an excellent version that updates every aspect while preserving the classic gameplay. Truxton Extreme marks the return of a legendary series in the best possible way. I’d be lying if I said I found it accessible, since it’s one of the hardest games I’ve played in recent years, but at the same time, I’m glad that Tatsujin kept the essence intact. Easy games come out every day, but true challenges are few and far between.

Truxton Extreme proves that a long-dormant series can return for more than nostalgia. The spirit of Truxton remains at its core: overwhelming firepower is balanced by the tension of losing momentum after a single mistake, while repeated attempts gradually turn intimidating enemy formations into patterns you understand and overcome. Extreme builds on that foundation rather than simply recreating it, using its wider battlefield, on-the-fly speed changes, weapon choices, and EX Boost system to create new decisions about positioning, survival, and score. Story, Arcade, Arena, local co-op, online rankings, training tools, and accessibility options make the package unusually complete. Repeated campaign stages and lengthy retries can become tiring, but the shooting itself remains consistently strong. Combined with its competitive price, Truxton Extreme is an impressive revival that shows how a classic arcade shooter can return as a genuine modern sequel rather than a nostalgic imitation.

Truxton Extreme is every arcade-goer's dream—though it is certainly not for the faint of heart. Its high-speed, precision-based gameplay, outstanding soundtrack, and challenging stages make it a worthy successor, while its unlockable modes, model gallery, and animated manga really help complete the package. It is a memorable experience to say the least, but players should be fully aware of what they are getting into before taking the plunge.

It may not be a casual-friendly game, but it sure is a hardcore-friendly game. Truxton Extreme certainly lives up to its name, as it’s a bullet hell game that will push you to your limits and reward you when you succeed.

The tradeoff here is found in Truxton Extreme not offering much in the way of novelty outside of that adherence to its old school feel. Even with the inclusion of new modes and more direct control over your ship, there isn’t much here you couldn’t find in other releases in the genre, but the quality of the presentation and gameplay tension found in each stage is well worth the time investment for those who are up for it.

Truxton Extreme doesn’t reinvent the vertical shooter genre. Instead, it modernises a beloved arcade classic while preserving everything that made it memorable in the first place. The gameplay is fast, satisfying and wonderfully intense, the soundtrack is excellent, and the new visual style successfully updates the series without losing its identity. The biggest hurdle will undoubtedly be the difficulty. This is still a game built around persistence, practice and improving your skills over multiple attempts. Players looking for generous accessibility options or a more relaxed experience may bounce off fairly quickly. But if you’re someone who misses the golden age of arcade shooters, or you’re simply looking for a challenging action game that rewards mastery, Truxton Extreme delivers. It’s exciting, unapologetically retro, and proof that sometimes the old formulas still work brilliantly.

Truxton Extreme is a welcome return for a classic shoot-'em-up, featuring a great revamp. The game's essence has been preserved, and both the new soundtrack and visuals are excellent; while the story's pacing could be a bit smoother, nothing about it discourages players from bringing the Tatsujin to life and trying to save Earth once again.

Being able to enjoy a game in a genre I love so much—and one of such high quality—makes me feel quite embarrassed that a series like Truxton completely flew under my radar over the years.

Yuge and the Tatsujin team have delivered an inspired sequel to a genre legend, adding new flavours to the vertical Truxton recipe that, in many ways, evolve the game into a modern entry in the genre rather than one that rides on its legacy. Adding Story Mode makes the game digestible for commoners and veterans alike without having to forfeit its demanding difficulty. The widescreen approach and a few concessions in the name of accessibility may tick some vertical shmup fans off, but this is more than a fitting sequel. It feels like the natural evolution of the 35-year dormant franchise.
