Even without turning to those updates and additions, there's enough to celebrate. You could put any car on any track and lose yourself in the simulation for hours, squinting through sun caught in the smeared perspex windscreen of a Z4 GT as it sets over Spa and you pick out entry, apex and exit points, or pawing an Elise this way and that through the swerves of Magione. Assetto Corsa's laser focus on the driving experience works wonders - and when it comes to replicating that simple, brilliant pleasure, there's no other game right now that does it better.

Despite some thorns in the AC racing rose bouquet, Kunos has created an auto game that is definitely worth taking for a spin. My advice is park some of your expectations and for the time being approach Assetto Corsa as, 'Your Driving Simulator,' instead.

This isn't a casual gamer's sim-style racer, but if you're looking for a more authentic driving sim Assetto Corsa might just win your heart.

Assetto Corsa is definitely a solid driving simulation. Although it is let down by the lack of content, this is definitely one of the most realistic simulators around. I tend to prefer a little more fun, and if not, would like a bit more help in terms of tutorials on offer which I mentioned above. I think if you had a decent steering wheel, that is where Assetto Corsa could become one hell of an experience. If they do plan on doing a second one down the line, a more complete and meaningful Career Mode would definitely mean a higher score from me. Assetto Corsa is more frustrating than anything, and one that is only for the very hardcore driving fans out there.

An exceptional racing simulator, with an edge like no other, which ironically lacks the final polish, which bars it from greatness.

Really the appeal of Assetto Corsa is in taking control of Lamborghinis and Ferraris and racing around tracks that are really beautiful for high precision cars that have good acceleration built into them. It's far more focused on what it does well than many other racing games, and unfortunately the overall package suffers a little as a consequence, but I just can't get over how much I accelerating out of corners in this one.

Assetto Corsa has its share of problems. It can't compete with Forza, Gran Turismo or Project Cars when it comes to looks, cars or tracks. The career mode is tedious and often frustrating, and the presentation makes it feel even nerdier and less accessible than it is. Yet the core driving experience remains magnificent, with some of the best handling and most immersive racing around. This isn't a racer for everyone – it's tough, demanding and a bit too hardcore – but if you want a sim with thrills and authenticity, it's well worth taking for a spin.

Assetto Corsa may succeed as a simulation, but it fails as a game. Clearly a ton of work has gone into making sure the cars handle correctly and that the tracks are as realistic as possible, which just makes the end result even more heartrending. It has a terrible user interface, isn't fun to play and doesn't feature any of the helpful tools that make Forza such an appealing game.

It's in dire need of a patch to fix the difficulty, but unfortunately no patch will solve the screen tearing and frame rate issues… and in a racing game there is no bigger sin.

It's a real shame that Assetto Corsa is stuck with uninspiring modes and presentation issues as the actual act of driving is engrossing and rewarding

Assetto Corsa is a great-looking, excellent-sounding, meticulously crafted simulation that offers a very realistic racing experience. Its authenticity does come at a cost, however - it's very difficult to drive well, and requires a considerable investment of your time to get the most out of it. However, if you're a hardcore racing enthusiast who loves a challenge, Assetto Corsa is one of the best driving sims available.

Assetto Corsa is a frustrating drive with a punishing learning curve that never truly pays you back for your time investment. It fails to provide an effective way to learn its complicated intricacies and lacks features that a game of its ilk requires. It's also simultaneously the best and worst presented racing game of the past few years, with superbly detailed cars and tracks hampered by awful long-distance scenery and ugly roadside textures. Ultimately, this is a disappointment that lacks the heart required to truly celebrate the cars it has so lovingly recreated.

Gritty and realistic, Assetto Corsa is for serious racing fans. It lacks finesse, but it's one of the best racers on the market.

Assetto Corsa is a very rare product in the modern gaming landscape. A rigorous driving simulator, an unique title especially on consoles, where usually prevail different kinds of racing games.

While it may provide a great simulation for the hardcore racer, Assetto Corsa will leave the more casual racing audience behind.

With that said, hopefully the game grows over time. I know Evolution Studios turned Driveclub into an enjoyable experience after a failed launch. Maybe Kunos Simulazioni can do the same for Assetto Corsa.
