Rocking the original BUILD engine to full effect, this love letter to the classics is more of what you always wanted but couldn't quite get growing up. It brings back all those memories and actually reinvents this style of game, better than it ever really was. The switch is a great platform for this to shine with its motion controls and docked or hand-held play schemes, and even portably, it stands up as a solid game for you to play on your travels too.

Ion Fury takes inspiration from the great retro shooters of the industry and runs with it. High-octane gunfights mixed with retro style and one-liners is a formula that never gets old. Ion Fury is a retro fix all its own, and it does it so well. Despite its setbacks, it's a blast to play and worthy of Build engine that it utilizes.

It has a number of stumbles, but if you want to take a 25-year blast-to-the-past, Ion Fury doesn’t surpass the FPS games of the age, but it does stand well against them, making it a good choice both for veterans of the age and for those new to the classic shooter style.

Ion Fury is one of the best First Person Shooters to come out in years. Jaw dropping retro graphics, an awesome arsenal and action bursting from every seam, this is a must play.

If you're looking for a retro shooter that isn't actually a 25-year-old port of a N64 game, then Ion Fury is the time-travelling love letter from the past you've been waiting for. While its weapons and boss fights won't leave much of an imprint on your memory, the speed and intensity of its gunfights and the intricacy of its level designs more than make up for it. If you want to be punished and rewarded by the shooter principles of old, this is the new/old FPS for you.

Ion Fury for Xbox One X is an example of worthy endeavors implemented through the bottom. The modern player is likely to be repelled by its specific appearance and problems with variety, and its current technical condition with impassable bugs and performance issues makes it possible to recommend only the PC version to old-school connoisseurs and fans of pixel experiences.

Titles that don’t just tap heavily into nostalgia but fully embrace it are always a risky proposition...

As someone with a lot of nostalgia for the BUILD era of PC first-person shooters, I had high hopes for Ion fury on Xbox One. Sadly, this port’s abundance of glitches, bizarre performance problems and a lack of optimization for consoles make it too frustrating to recommend. Perhaps with the magic of post-release patching, the worst of these kinks will be ironed out. However, at the time of this writing, today is not that day.

Ion Fury effortlessly channels the spirit of old school shooters like Duke Nukem 3D, but the action is slowed by dull backtracking and environmental puzzles. When it flows there's a good challenge to be had, but the level design can be too convoluted for its own good.

Ultimately, Ion Fury is just a disappointment on console.

Following on from her 2016 debut, Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison hits the big time with Ion Fury; the latest first-person shooter from 3D Realms - creators of the infamous Duke Nukem franchise. Ion Fury is a celebration of old-school, first-person shooter games, and embraces those classic tropes in beautiful and bloody fashion.

It leverages a classic engine in new and exciting ways and is only very rarely hampered by it. While the humor may rub some players the wrong way, it's arguably worth suffering through for a game that is in many ways better than its source material. This is a '90s shooter the way you remember them, rather than perhaps how they actually were.

Ion Fury is clearly a love letter to 90s shooters. Lovingly crafted and blisteringly fast, it's well worth your time.

Ion Fury is an old-school shooting fan's dream. All of the mechanics are intact, from non-regenerative health to the ability to carry a full arsenal of weapons, and the level design feels intuitive and encourages exploration without needing waypoints. Some of the new mechanics fit in well, but a few, like the need to reload, only increase the difficulty on a tough game. Seeing all of this done on a decades-old engine is enough to convince you of the versatility of those old FPS engines. Unless you hate the old FPS style, Ion Fury is a must-have for your gaming library.

Ion Fury is a game with a great old-school atmosphere. The story is postponed to the sidelines and the main content of the game is to shoot practically everything that moves. Though the weapon arsenal is not the largest, for killing from afar and running between enemies sufficient. In addition, the game has a great soundtrack, which is different for each level.

A very well-made, entertaining throwback shooter with some useful quality of life improvements, but nothing you didn't see 20 years ago.

Ion Fury is a nostalgic tribute to the classic '90s first person shooter games such as Blood, Shadow Warrior and especially, Duke Nukem 3D and despite running on a 20 year old technology, delivers a superb and extremely fun experience that even rivals most of the recent games released in this genre. FPS fans might not want to miss this game.

Ion Fury is a good fps, paying tribute to the old school with its fast-paced gameplay and humor throughout the whole game. While that might sound great, the game is kinda repetitive and the enemies lack inspiration.

Ion Fury is a game that knows what it’s about, a polished version of the very best of yesteryear with the right attitude to boot. That attitude might be disagreeable to some; however, this is far from a game that should be taken as seriously as to believe it has a stance on social politics. If you can keep that under wraps, then it’s a great little homage to the titles that were once kings of the industry and maybe, just maybe, you’ll have a bit of fun.
