Spelunky 2 may not make the kinds of waves that its predecessor did, likely as a consequence of the growth of indies and roguelikes in general. Don’t let that trick you into thinking it’s any less addictive and enjoyable. If you ever think you’ll just play for a bit you’re sure to lose yourself in these lunar caverns, driven by the seemingly infinite possibilities and risk of death. Even if you may never see everything it has to offer, you’ll never feel like you’re missing out with this nearly perfect sequel.

Spelunky 2 turns out to be a virtually unbeatable sequel to a top-notch video game. The additions made may seem small, but they ultimately make a big difference.

Spelunky 2 takes what made the first game so good and adds to it. It’s a challenge that never seems to get old and it’s easy to find yourself losing track of time, as you have just one more go. There’s a lot to learn about the mines and if you like rogue-lites, you may just find yourself addicted to this one.

While it’s missing a few opportunities to embrace the advancements of the rogue-like genre, “Spelunky 2” still expands skillfully on the base of one of the first games in this popular style of games. With a load of new content and secrets to discover, this sequel offers everything fans of the original wanted, while offering very little to convince those that were repelled by the crushing difficulty. If you have any love for rogue-like games you owe it to yourself to at least check out this modern classic.

These are my Dark Souls maintained in the atmosphere of Indiana Jones in 2D. Spelunky 2, like its predecessor, is a delightfully difficult and backbreaking crossing through the levels and corridors. My weapon, however, was a dog, and a turkey was a steed – so I had a great time.

Spelunky 2 is undoubtedly a great sequel to the first version of the game, a sequence that, although not entirely perfect and has a series of minor flaws, is one of those games that, no matter how hard, gives you enough valuable experience to want to go to it again despite many failures, and don't despair of trying to succeed in it.

Although Spelunky 2 recycles much of the formula that made the first game so great, it is a fantastic evolution. This is another "benchmark" for procedural games, which promises to provide countless discoveries and curiosities over the years. It is a product that tests the skill of both beginners and veterans. An essential experience for fans of the genre, whether in solo or cooperative mode.

Spelunky 2 is more of Spelunky, and that is all it needs to be. It is still ridiculously enjoyable, packed with content, and the right mix of challenging and engaging. It's still going to kill you a half-dozen times, too. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it revitalizes an experience that risked going stale after a decade. The only downside is that the online experience isn't the best, but the rest of the game holds up great. If you liked Spelunky, then you'll like Spelunky 2, and if you never played the original, then Spelunky 2 is a great place to start. Just remember to always look before you leap.

The long year of 2020 has yet to come to a close, but if I was asked today Spelunky 2 would absolutely be my indie game of the year. There has not been a more challenging, rewarding, delightful and just plain fun game that even comes close. Everyone at Mossmouth really did a fantastic job bringing a worthy successor to an already beloved cult classic. If you love platformers or roguelikes and you have not checked out this game yet, it just may be your favorite game that you've never played.

Spelunky 2 is the classic title that will make you say "just one more game before I quit", only to make you suddenly realize you already played ten more.

Spelunky 2 is a superb hard-core platformer and you might be tortured by the traps and monsters in the random-generated maps thousands of times. However, once you master all the tricks, the challenges and the variety of the gameplay will make you engaged.

Mossmouth did the impossible with Spelunky 2 in managing to create a sequel to an incredible game that did not disenfranchise existing fans or turn off newbies.

Spelunky 2 is an absolute delight to play, even in the midst of my repeating failure in the game. Its randomized level generator and the bevy of tools to strategize your way through each level makes for a fun time. While the PvP isn't up to snuff with the main adventure, the ability to play this game with friends (online or local) will keep you occupied for months to come.

Spelunky 2 is a masterclass in great roguelite game design, expertly combining crushing difficulty with a steady drip of new secrets and lessons to keep you coming back for more. Some may be put off by the steep challenge-this is certainly a game you have to work for a bit-but putting in the effort is sure to reward you with plenty of thrilling memories. We'd give this game a high recommendation to any fans of roguelites or challenging platformers, and even if that doesn't describe you, this is still certainly worth a look.

That’s about as much as should be spoiled for a game which all fans of the first and many curious neophytes will readily purchase on sight. Spelunky 2 is, at the end of the day, more Spelunky, an unspeakably radiant generosity to the medium at large. Whether or not it’s perfect is beside the point, because it’s the very definition of a must-play game. While multiplayer could not be tested for this review, the addition of online co-op will likely set Twitch streams on fire, and the return of daily runs ensures that Spelunky 2 is a game that will happily remain installed for years to come, and may even improve with age.

Strong of a simple concept but at the same time extremely brilliant, Spelunky 2 therefore proves to be a splendid sequel that manages to improve what its predecessor did practically from every possible point of view. The care that regulates the procedural generation of the game world represents an almost inexhaustible source of stimuli and if we add to this game mechanics close to absolute perfection, the introduction of multiplayer and a technical component that, as evidenced by the new physics of fluids, shows obvious steps forward compared to the past, it is really difficult to find a single reason to advise against the purchase of Spelunky to any gamer.

Many games fall into the roguelike genre, but few define it. Spelunky 2's secrets and danger-infused caverns make it simultaneously one of the most frustrating and rewarding games I've ever played. Yet, having barely scratched the surface of what it offers, I can't wait to start another run-whether in search of secrets or just to see how far I can ultimately get. And in the end, isn't the desire to continue playing the hallmark of any great game?

A teasing blend of punishment and reward that will delight roguelike fans whether they played the first or not, Mossmouth's great achievement is in adding so much depth and scope without overcomplicating the formula.
