Valkyria Chronicles Reviews
Valkyria Chronicles is one of the most unique and fun strategy games I've ever played, despite a few flaws with the port.
While heavy on cutscenes, Valkyria Chronicles on PC is more vibrant than ever, and just as unique in its approach to tactics.
In its music, writing, art and acting ,Valkyria Chronicles is brimming with the emotional potency to bring a man to tears. It would make an excellent movie if that were all it had going for it, but the story is told in a way that could only work in a video game, and built on a rock-solid framework of deep and challenging tactical gameplay.
I said Valkyria Chronicles wasn't just a brilliant game, but a brilliant Sega game. There's an element of wishful thinking to that, but for me Sega has always been one of those developers that occasionally touches perfection – and with unexpected, original games. The mechanics Valkyria Chronicles uses are potentially dissonant, but the game is a unified whole as well as a work of real craftsmanship.
As a ten-year-old game, Valkyria Chronicles still holds up impressively well; this is some of the best strategy action that gaming has to offer and having it available on the go is an enormous plus. Although there are some minor balancing and performance issues, Valkyria Chronicles offers up an emotionally-gripping, beautiful and fun strategy experience that offers a considerable amount of value for the price of admission. We'd give this one a high recommendation to anybody looking for a quality strategy RPG for their Switch; it may be marginally rougher than Valkyria Chronicles 4, but you really can't go wrong here.
As bizarre a mix of genres, art style, and subject matter as you could ever hope to see, especially on the PC. But it all works and absolutely deserves this second shake of the die.
Scoring Valkyria Chronicles is really difficult for me. On one hand, I didn't necessarily enjoy the gameplay. On the other hand, the story was enjoyable and this really is an excellent PC port both visually and how smoothly it runs. For a game that came out in its original form so long ago, I tend to place more value on how well they ported the game to PC than how much I personally enjoyed it
Still a great game, worth playing if you haven't played the series and enjoy the genre.
A tale of war, bigotry, friendship, and the human condition Valkyria Chronicles manages to combine a captivating story with a unique combat system!
Valkyria Chronicles was one of the strongest RPG's released in the 2000-2010 decade, regardless of platform or origin. This PC port doesn't offer many of the options PC gamers expect, but it preserves and respects that experience. The strong story and gameplay remains intact, despite some small hiccups.
Although not Game of the Year, Valkyria Chronicles is worth 30 hours of your time.
I had high praise for Valkyria Chronicles when it first came out on PlayStation 3. Even now, I feel that Valkyria Chronicles is a game that deserves to be played by everyone. It's innovative, refreshing and blends different mechanics from other genres exceptionally well.
If you're a fan of RPGs, you should really check the game out; the story is engaging and the characters are fun, but it's the charming picture-book aesthetic and unique combat system that really make the difference. At a knockdown price with all the extra DLC included, there's really no reason not to give it a go.
Now with Steam-PC availability and with low requirements, this classic turn-based tactical role-playing game easily still holds up with the best of them. Save Gallia for the first time or all over again in a nostalgic fantasy.
It's surprising how well 'Valkyria Chronicles' has aged over the years. Everything from the gameplay and the story, to the graphics and the sound, makes the game a joy to play through. Sega made the right choice in porting this formerly PlayStation 3 exclusive title to Steam, as now an even wider audience than ever before is able to enjoy what is bound to be a classic title.
Valkyria Chronicles' engrossing story with beautiful art style and unique gameplay makes this title easy to recommend. Just be prepared for a challenge.
Since Into the Breach hit at the end of August, there has been a barrage of quality strategy games on the Switch, so it can be tempting to skip Valkyria Chronicles. But don't do it. It's a brisk game, and there are some things like the graveyard for fallen troops that I wish were carried into future titles. War may be hell, but Valkyria Chronicles is a little slice of heaven.
Valkyria Chronicles is an interesting title that certainly takes some of the core ideas of the Japanese role-playing game genre and twists them in innovative ways, but the whole package has not managed to fully capture my attention.
Being able to play Valkyria Chronicles on-the-go is such a treat and the overall experience holds up beautifully a decade after its debut.
Whether you’re fresh to the series or already experienced Valkyria Chronicles 4 on Switch earlier this year, it’s still worth checking out the original. What it might lack in visual polish it more than makes up for with a rich story, affable characters and satisfying and strategic gameplay. Here’s hoping we see the second and third game make the leap to Switch too.
