Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is emblematic of the whole Pixel Remaster line: an accessibly modern yet aesthetically authentic re-release of an essential RPG.

I don’t need much justification to revisit Final Fantasy VI. If you’re a Final Fantasy fan, this is grade A, top shelf stuff. Full of weird minigames, memorable characters, and a compelling story, VI is an excellent RPG. If you’ve never played it before, you’d be an absolute fool to pass this up. Even if you’ve bought it several times already, I still recommend the game. Square Enix has tried to make the definitive version of this game, and I’d say they more or less succeeded.

The last Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster installment is here, and FFVI is feels as innovative and impressive now as it did in 1994.

Final Fantasy VI is still a classic and one of the best in the franchise, now with orchestrated music and redone pixel art. It still retains the issues of the rest of the Pixel Remasters, but does have a bit of extra visual spice on top to make them hurt less.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is an inconsistent work. Graphically, it has some nice effects, but also some ugly elements, the most obvious one is the typography. It is a remake that removes important things from the original game and adopts unnecessary new features. It's not the best version of the game, but it's not the worst either.

Perhaps this pixel remaster still needs a little more cooking to become the definitive version of Final Fantasy VI, but it is a totally recommendable way both to discover Final Fantasy VI for the first time and to revisit a cult classic that remains so fresh and valid as the first day.

The Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is a masterclass on how a company should handle its JRPG legacy, especially if it’s a game as monumental as this.

These six remasters provide a superb way to experience or re-experience Final Fantasy history. Not all Final Fantasies were created equal, however; some, like Final Fantasy IV and VI, have aged gracefully and remain great narrative-driven adventures, while others might feel a bit more archaic even with the quality-of-life additions. Purists also may not appreciate the new balancing introduced in these new remasters. Even so, if you don't have them on a cartridge with an ancient TV to hook them up to or don't want to experience the bonus dungeons added in other versions, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more convenient, aesthetically pleasing, and faithful way to play through some of the best JRPGs ever made.

There’s a lot to love in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters package, while not perfect, each remaster is absolutely going to be considered the best version of each game yet – especially by fans of the series looking to play an updated version of an experience they treasure.

However, the 8-bit and 16-bit Final Fantasy trilogies are both genuine masterpieces. These games wove deep, compelling stories that were as thought-provoking and artful as they were entertaining. Back in the day, they were a promise of what video games could be, and what people had to look forward to as the medium emerged as an art form. Increasingly, they’re a sad statement for what games could have been, had the medium not shifted to a pastiche of Hollywood excesses.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a wonderful piece of archival gaming, and an example of how older titles should be ported and collected for future generations. Games are an art form like any other, and while they grow increasingly nebulous and online, a push for archiving games, old and new, must be made for the medium’s sake. This collection is a small but significant step on that road, and I hope other publishers take note.

Final Fantasy is a saga that has been able to remain on the crest of the wave for 35 years thanks to the countless experiments, not all successful, from the point of view of gameplay.

Still, it's so hard to fault Final Fantasy VI. It's a thrill ride of an RPG, and remains one of the most brilliantly paced instalments in the entire series. Combine that with such an endearing cast, deeply engaging gameplay, some amazing sprite work, and a stunning soundtrack, and you've got an all-time classic.
