Return to Monkey Island Reviews
All these great visuals, puzzles, and dialogues create a really great video game that doesn’t have to be ashamed of its roots. Return to Monkey Island is more than simply a nostalgia act. It has its individuality.

Terrible Toybox and Devolver Digital’s Return to Monkey Island hit all the right notes that proper homage to the original. It brought classic humor, a great story, and a new way to play the game to make it faster. It’s one of the brighter spots of a skimpy game release year.
Return to Monkey Island is a brilliantly modernised point-and-click adventure game that's tailor-made for both fans of its classic predecessors and anyone who loves narrative-driven exploration titles.
Return to Monkey Island is well worth the wait. This is a quest for booty you don't want to miss.
Return to Monkey Island brings the beloved classic point-and-click series into the modern puzzle adventure genre, and it's a perfect fit. It's a fine addition to the Monkey Island series, but it nevertheless seems held back by Monkey Island 2's strange ending. In its attempt to explain it away, it just hurts its own narrative, which had the potential for more than it achieved. But it is still a fun ride, full of wild, funny, and surprisingly sincere moments. I will be keenly looking forward to the next Monkey Island game from the mind of Gilbert and his team.
When it comes to pure fan service, there won't be many better this year than Return to Monkey Island. It feels like the true sequel to LeChuck's Revenge and it feels as though its clever, self-referential wit is a product of Gilbert's return. As sad and nostalgic as parts of Guybrush's newest tale can be, I had a wonderful time revisiting familiar people and places in yet another golden-age adventure.
Return to Monkey Island is a delightful adventure, and while it might not quite reach the unobtainable prestige of its predecessors, with a much more accessible design it’s destined to become Guybrush Threepwood’s most popular tale yet.
After more than thirty years it's so nice to have the original developers Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman and the team bring the originality and charm of the first games back for this last outing. There's actually quite a touching note that becomes available after completing the game that goes into some details about the development of Return to Monkey Island and it really does just feel right (perhaps more for us older gamers who grew up with it than people just joining it now). If you were a fan of the original game/s then absolutely grab a copy… it's a nostalgic joy and will warm your heart better than a bottle of Rum.
Guybrush is back... again, to thwart the actions of Le Chuck and to learn the secret of Monkey Island!
Return to Monkey Island is a nostalgic and fun swashbuckling experience that delivers an adventure that fans of the series and genre have been waiting years for.
Return to Monkey Island is a perfectly judged return of an instant classic for the genre, with just the right level of complexity and challenge, aside from some minor quibbles.

A joyous adventure game that, if you've ever been a fan, should be savoured like a tall glass of aged grape juice.
It’s been a long time coming, but Return to Monkey Island is an absolute treat for fans of the series. It looks wonderful, it sounds wonderful, and its combination of excellent puzzles and expert writing will keep you transfixed from start to finish. Our only real complaint is that newcomers may find this a difficult starting point – but that’s easily rectified by jumping into the originals.
Return to Monkey Island is a prime example of how to revive an iconic series and is one of this year’s best point-and-click titles.
Guybrush's new adventure is every bit as fun as his previous ones. This is a triumph of a game that manages to live up to exorbitant amounts of expectation and ticks every box.
Return to Monkey Island is remarkably balanced in bringing the new and the classic together for a cohesive, nostalgic and relevant work that celebrates the legacy of the franchise while elevating it to a new level in today's entertainment industry.

Return to Monkey Island is a game worthy of the Monkey Island name. Not only has it retained the spirit of the series, it also has cleverly paid homage to previous titles and incorporated them into the canon. We can't thank Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman and all of their teammates enough for making a 30-year-old dream come true.

Nowadays, it's very scarce to see a game developed fully with love and passion. Return to Monkey Island is one of these scarce games. If you want to spend some time away from competitive games or Big AAA games, Return to Monkey Island is a good choice.

Return to Monkey Island is a love letter to the franchise and adventure games in general. It succeeds at what it set out to do from the outset, with a fun story, clever puzzles, and a big pinch of nostalgia to top it all off. It may play it a bit too safe, but that's easily forgotten when the rest of the experience is so consistently delightful.
Return to Monkey Island is a good modernization of a classic pirate tale, even if it overuses nostalgia. Its array of sensible puzzles and light humor outshine pacing issues and a discordant art style.
