While the release of the fifth installment in the Tomb Raider series clearly showed the franchise’s fatigue and stagnation due to its annual releases, the Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered collection makes a good effort to improve the frustrating obstacles and injects a strong sense of nostalgia. That is, of course, if you manage to survive Angel of Darkness!

With some fantasic puzzles met with some fustrating level designs, control mechanics that are improved but still feel flawed (in modern) this is a release that will please fans itching for more expeditions. Aspyr have done a fantastic job fixing up the graphics and presentation of the game, to bring it upto a relatively sound PS3 looking title. Tomb Raider IV-VI remastered looks great in 4k and runs smoothly in 60fps.

If you loved the remastered Tomb Raiders I-III released last year, then you'll definitely want to grab IV-VI remastered as well. The nostalgia and the novelty of revisiting the old Tomb Raider games is certainly worthwhile, but with IV-VI you're witnessing three Tomb Raiders that gradually lose track of what the series was all about. The Last Revelation and its new ideas are successful, and you'll enjoy your explorations in Egypt, but Chronicles and Angel of Darkness reek of missed potential and both of them come off as rush jobs. The remaster efforts are good enough in terms of uplifting these relics visually, and the framerate is crisp as well, but you'll still need to wrestle with terrible design choices inherent within these three games, and the pounding desire for these Tomb Raider games to be remade for a contemporary audience.

The controversial Tomb Raider trilogy remaster aims to introduce new fans to the dark era of Lara Croft's adventures while preserving her legacy. Despite the visual improvements and feature additions, the Nintendo Switch version lacks the polish it deserves, featuring a barrage of bugs and lengthy loading screens.

Tomb Raider IV-V-VI Remastered is a bittersweet ending to the classic Lara Croft adventures, bringing a really good game, an average one and a mediocre one that's below the British muse's legacy. However, the historic value of their preservation is undeniable, recognizing the past issues to create a beautiful future, like the franchise would do during its renewal years later.

[...]the questionable camera, technical limitations and issues inherited from the original releases don't allow this collection to be a definitive remaster. Even so, for fans of the genre and those who want to know Lara Croft's darkest era, the collection is worth it.

I would highly recommend this game as it’s a good chance to get into the older games and I will never complain about the original Tomb Raider series. I think this might open the door for a remaster of Tomb Raider Legend and Underworld. Whether they actually need one or not is a different matter all together but I am very grateful that Aspyr decided to remaster these classics for newer consoles. Honestly, I did consider giving this game the platinum award simply because it’s brought back the Serpent Rogue music. However with the inconsistencies in graphics and bugs that weren’t present in the original games I can’t do it. Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered gets the Thumb Culture Gold Award.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered offers fans a reason to revisit this trilogy with improved graphics and small but welcome gameplay enhancements, and while these entries remain fairly average, Aspyr has put in great effort to honor them, making them a worthwhile experience for those who enjoyed the first trilogy—just don’t forget to save!

While the technical issues held the game back for me, there was enough action and adventure to say that collectors and fans of the series may want to take a look at this new set but hardcore gamers may have different expectations and be disappointed.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is an excellent remaster of both the best entry in the series and some of the worst.

It is however a package that is nice for hardcore fans of the franchise, but also those who want to rediscover the most advanced classic Tomb Raider (IV, that is), the bizarre piece of gaming history that is Angel of Darkness… and also Tomb Raider V, I guess. Sometimes, even missable games are worth a solid remaster.

With Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, three more classics from video game history have been given an attractive face-lift. The graphical implementation scores well and the modern controls make it easier for us to plunge into Lara's adventurer once again. However, if you want to play old-school, you can also opt for the tank controls and graphics of the original. Whether you're an experienced adventurer or a budding archaeologist, the remastered version is highly recommended to everyone, especially because of the unbelievably fantastic locations and the dense atmosphere with its unique selling point. Nevertheless, you have to get used to the somewhat fiddly controls and dusty gameplay. From today's perspective, the typical macho slogans from the 2000s are of course a little too much of a good thing and Angel of Darkness is not really convincing in the remastered version either.

Tomb Raider IV-V-V-VI Remastered is a correct remastering and the best way to play these three great titles starring Lara Croft. The improved controls and updated graphics make it possible for new generations to enjoy these titles. Perhaps the improvements are a little short, because aspects such as the cinematics or dubbing remain identical to the original titles, but a good job has been done. The sixth installment, despite being the most worked in terms of controls and improved mechanics, is still quite irregular.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is a nice nostalgia package for those who grew up with the original Tomb Raider games. Aspyr added a few interesting perks here and there across all three games, especially for Angel of Darkness where they added cut content and improved the story telling; among other perks. While these are more approachable than the previous remastered trilogy, they still show their age. Players with the patience and curious about exploring Lara Croft’s past, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is a good option.

This remaster makes these games easier to revisit, but don’t expect a full modernization. The core experience is still rough in places, but if you’re up for the challenge, it’s still worth diving in.

Two top-tier, nostalgic adventure games that will delight both old and new Tomb Raider fans…and a third game that won’t do any of that.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is a title I can wholeheartedly recommend only to the biggest fans of the series and hardcore retro enthusiasts. It’s by no means a bad game, but it should have been better adapted to modern standards. I believe that Lara Croft’s classic adventures deserve proper remasters, not just a slight facelift that improves textures and boosts resolution.

The work done by Aspyr for the old Tomb Raiders is impeccable. The only downside is that, as they advanced in technical aspects, they ended up with the less interesting titles from the first wave of the franchise, which is not their fault, but rather a result of the original design of these games. For those who are true Tomb Raider fans and have the patience for the controls of these games, it’s still an unmissable trilogy to relive the nostalgia, even though they are not as good as the first three.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is easily the best way to play all three of these games. They’ve never looked better, never played better, and in the case of Angel of Darkness, are manageable now and even have cut content. But all these games are brutal, tough challenges that will punish and frustrate. They’re not always fun, they’re definitely pretty rough, and don’t quite have the same standard of quality as the early trilogy. Still, Aspyr have done an incredible job with the games – better than the last time out – the price of history is well worth it, and they’ve somehow made this forgotten trilogy at least slightly more enjoyable than they were before. One cannot fault the efforts of remastering at all, even if you are at odds with the content.
