It doesn’t feel great to criticize a title that has clearly had effort put into it and is even somewhat charming in its execution, but Tails of Iron 2 simply fails to be different or interesting, at least to someone who is more than familiar with the genres it borrows from.

Much like its predecessor, Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter is a solid roguelike action RPG with plenty of entertainment. However, the similarities to the first game are so pronounced that it sometimes feels like a retread rather than a true sequel. This is especially evident in the core gameplay mechanics and environments, which, while still enjoyable, hold the game back from taking the series to the next level.

If you're a fan of soulslike and 2D Metroidvania-style games, this is a title you should definitely play . Oh, and one detail I must mention before finishing this analysis, the voice of the narrator that accompanies us throughout the game is that of Geralt of Rivia himself and the jokes that appear also seem to be taken from this very character.

Overall, despite my misgivings about the additions made to the basic formula, I’ve still got a lot of affection for Whiskers of Winter. I’m a sucker for this art style and world design; woodland critters cosplaying Game of Thrones will never not be a superb aesthetic, a perfect mixture of grimdark and adorable. Expanding it beyond the rats was a great choice, and I love the places that decision takes us. The basics of the gameplay and the combat are still really solid, and while I think the extra complexity of the elemental damage system muddies that somewhat and weakens the world-building, if you’re a mechanics-and-systems kind of player, you’ll likely enjoy it far more than I did.
Odd Bug Studio is back with a new installment of its acclaimed 2D souls of little mice. As in the first part, we will continue to have very demanding fights that require preparation, study of the opponent and perfect timing if we do not want to bite the dust. Crafting becomes even more important than before, as it is the basis for improving our equipment and is the best way to fix our fortress.

Tails of Iron 2 offers a dark, fable-like narrative across three difficulty levels, appealing to a broad range of players. With its stylized visuals and captivating atmosphere, it’s well worth experiencing. Although its linear structure provides limited freedom, it remains compelling despite some areas that could be improved.
