Overboard's more complex follow-up is another great evil detective game.

Far from cribbing Overboard's homework, Expelled! is a tighter, more focused detective story that really makes the most of its replayable timeloop structure.

A 1920s golden age mystery in which you plot your own path through the scheming world of an all-girls boarding school, told with energy and some bugs.

Expelled! follows a similar blueprint to Overboard!, but ambition in its narrative design helps the game to feel rewarding in a different way. There's more to the story than trying to clear Verity's name. How Verity develops as a character across several playthroughs is the reason why Inkle's latest is able to stand out on its own.

With exceptional writing, beautiful art, a compelling environment, and a captivating central gameplay mechanic, Expelled! is a video game work of art. If you have any interest in visual novels, adventure games, whodunits, or time loops, I can’t recommend it enough. Believe me, you will want to play this one again and again!

Depending on how you play the story, you'll solve Verity's dilemma in a few hours. I had moments where I thought I had everything figured out and just needed to trigger the right dialogue options, but even still I wound up getting surprised more often than not. Expelled is a tightly wound narrative puzzle game that makes me excited that it's labeled "An Overboard Game" because hopefully that means Inkle makes a game like this every few years to wrinkle my time-loop-loving brain and completely delight me.

With a story that keeps you engaged and guessing to the end (whichever end you uncover), Expelled! is a worthy successor to inkle’s previous glories, and it’s the kind of game that every mystery fan needs to play.

Expelled! is a brilliantly crafted mystery with a clever time-loop mechanic and razor-sharp writing. While its replay-driven structure may test some players' patience, the game rewards persistence with surprising depth and multiple compelling endings. A standout narrative experience that turns schoolyard drama into an unforgettable whodunit.

Expelled! is a fun murder mystery that sometimes frustrates you but brings you back from the brink of quitting the game in its entirety once you get the hang of it.

Inkle studio should be praised for the whole concept. The characters are written really well, and each acquaintance has their own personality and way of speaking. That said, Expelled! is a neat experience, but something about the plot still didn't work for me even though I loved their Overboard! murder mystery.

xpelled! is a lot of fun if you are into a Groundhog Day story of mild insanity taking place in a seemingly mundane setting, yet you scratch the surface just a bit, and you get to see the wild twists and turns that lie beneath.

Expelled! stands out as an engaging and challenging experience for fans of narrative and investigation games. With its looping mechanics, the game tests the player's patience and cunning, requiring attention to detail and strategic planning. The well-constructed narrative, combined with the freedom of choice and multiple possible outcomes, maintains immersion and encourages multiple attempts to explore all the story's ramifications. However, the high volume of information and the need for repetition can be tiring and uninspiring for some players, especially those who prefer a more linear progression.

Expelled! is a high-quality adventure game that works with the concept of an unreliable narrator. It also provides enough replayability, making it easy to recommend.

Playing inkle's games for the past 10 years makes me realize that I am a fan not just of their games, but of them as creators. When you engage with new content from a familiar artist, you start to sense their fingerprints. Knowing inkle’s style made me all the more delighted by change-ups and familiar methods. While Expelled! is slower and clunkier than Overboard!, it’s also richer and deeper. Now, I have to stop writing this review, because I'd really like to get back to playing it.

Like Overboard! before it, Expelled! is incredibly novel and satisfying that’s high school drama at its finest. Just getting the right ending doesn’t mean you’re done. It’s rare, but this game’s achievements will drive you towards its completion. Expelled! is anything but academic, there’s payoffs aplenty for this incredibly cunning mystery follow-up.
