Octopath Traveler 0 Reviews
It just goes to show the strength of Octopath Traveler that this one entirely playable and only slightly inelegant mechanic is my biggest issue with the game. Gorgeous art, an excellent soundtrack, a massive epic narrative that actually feels earned thanks to the strength of the writing and characterisation, and an exciting, tactical combat system. Yeah, it is, quite genuinely, an 80+ hour game, but that’s what the Christmas break is for, right?
Octopath Traveler 0 is a surprisingly solid adaptation of Champions of the Continent, preserving the franchise's visual charm, memorable music, and strategic combat system. Its more open structure and narrative focus on Orsterra bring a refreshing scope to the adventure. While the lack of Spanish localization and some stiff voice performances hold it back, it remains a deep and enjoyable JRPG experience for fans of the series.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a massive game, with an abundance of content and exploration available. It relies heavily on a more strategic style of turn-based combat than previous entries, with interesting stories and characters in a nostalgic graphical style. However, there are times where the story becomes a touch too cliché and predictable. It certainly doesn't lack in polish, though, with a fantastic soundtrack and delightful HD-2D visuals and, apart from a few hiccups, it runs without issue. This is the perfect title to get lost in for hours and hours.
With addictive combat, a cohesive story, and greater accessibility for players less keen on the experimental nature of the series' other titles, Octopath Traveler 0 delivers exactly what is expected of it as an entry point to the series. If you have never played the franchise, start here. If you have, prepare to see the formula perfected and a story that will be highly rewarding.

Opencritic: Octopath 0 delivers the best turn-based combat of any RPG I've played, paired with the level of storytelling and twists we've come to expect from the series. With all of that, it just took me back to Square's golden age RPGs

Octopath Traveler 0 might be a rebuild of a gacha game, but it's a fun, engaging and excellent stand-alone JRPG. There's no trace of the microtransactions and monetization, and what remains is a game that captures much of what makes the Octopath franchise so beloved. I expected something half-baked and got what might be my favorite entry in the franchise to date, and it's a title that I'd consider to be a must-play for fans of turn-based RPGs.
I have a few small issues, whether it's the late stages of the town building questline or the lack of class changing for all characters, but those are ultimately small potatoes to the successes that echo throughout the world of Orsterra in Octopath Traveler 0. The eight-player combat rules, the vignette-esque storylines are fascinating, and the overall world building is top notch. This is one of the best traditional turn-based RPGs I have played in ages and it makes me excited for what might be next from the folks involved with this excellent adventure.
Octopath Traveler 0, despite its conservatism, once again provides a magnificent lesson in how to unite the past and present of the genre. A superb JRPG, with significant new features within its own series, but whose lack of translation poses a huge barrier to users.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a fine addition for the series, unifying the narrative while expanding the tactical depth of its renowned combat system. It still has minor flaws here and there, but overall is as solid as the premises suggested.

Despite some of my issues with OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0, there was simply only one conclusion I could draw after finishing the game: the future of the series is bright and I couldn't be happier about that. 📚
OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 is a surprisingly great game that has far outgrown its origins as a mobile gacha game and has become a fully-fledged and worthy addition to the franchise.

Octopath Traveler 0 offers a cohesive JRPG experience that focuses on the story and the building of the series' world, with a clear highlighting of the villains' motives and the diversity of their paths. The turn-based combat system relies on planning and grants the battles tactical depth, and the village reconstruction system adds a good sense of progress. Artistically, the game is characterized by an attractive 2D-HD style and strong music; however, its world is limited and suffers from weak exploration and frequent random encounters. Overall, it is an enjoyable and satisfying experience for fans of the series and storytelling.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a huge, atmospheric and technically strong JRPG that will especially appeal to fans of the genre. It's longer and more ambitious than the previous parts, story wise more coherent, and plays like a dream on the Steam Deck. At the same time, that ambition also drags ballast in the form of pacing problems. For me as an RPG veteran, this is not a revolution, but a particularly solid and enjoyable journey in which I have gladly lost dozens of hours.

Like other games in the series, Octopath Traveler 0 can easily take players 100 hours to complete, especially if they delve deep into the town-building aspect. While I wish there were more interesting heroes to embody, once players get past the generic plot premise and delve into the meaty combat, there is no question that this game is a worthy entry into the franchise and a pick for those looking for a new JRPG to spend all their time with.
"The Best Installment in the Series Yet" Octopath Traveler 0 delivers a seamlessly integrated JRPG experience that blends classic and modern elements. Its eight-character combat system raises the bar for tactical possibilities, and the wide variety of recruits allows for the freedom to build multi-skilled teams. Despite a slow start and some simplistic mechanics, the gradual progression rewards the investment in narrative and strategic depth. Visually, aurally, and technically, the game is polished and confirms the series' maturity, delivering its strongest installment to date.

Octopath Traveler 0 successfully builds on the series’ signature HD-2D presentation and classic turn-based combat, delivering another visually striking and musically rich RPG adventure. The new cast of characters and intertwined storylines maintain the franchise’s narrative charm, even if the structure remains familiar. While the game doesn’t radically reinvent the formula, its refined mechanics and strong atmosphere make exploration consistently rewarding. Overall, it’s a solid continuation of the series that will particularly appeal to fans of traditional JRPG storytelling.

Octopath Traveler 0 has nothing to envy from other major JRPG titles and rightfully takes the "award" for best title in the series.

The experience brings the series back to its roots while proving it can still impress with each new release, offering bold and mature storytelling and unique content. It respects the essence of Japanese RPGs while introducing modern gameplay systems for a more engaging experience than ever. A true masterpiece that shouldn’t be missed, especially now as a full-fledged release beyond mobile constraints.

Octopath Traveler 0 keeps the magic of the series intact with brilliant turn-based combat, an interesting story, and the use of HD-2D that looks amazing in every scene. But it hurts that everything is only available in English, a real barrier for many players.
