For me, it is a losing battle. What started off fun has become shallow, repetitive and sorely lacking in content

If you are a fan of the Bomberman franchise, Super Bomberman R will probably satisfy you, but it's clearly focused on the multiplayer mode.

If it weren't plagued with issues, Super Bomberman R would be a fine return to the PC for the series. Both the campaign and the multiplayer lack the flourishes that make some of the older entries memorable, but the core gameplay still holds up enough to remain enjoyable for newcomers and more casual players of the series. You have to treat the game as a local multiplayer title instead of an online one and hope you don't get hit with controller issues. Considering both the price point and the fact that other indie titles have already run with this concept to a much better execution, however, your best bet is to check out the game once it goes on sale or has a good price drop.

An enjoyable game both cooperatively and competitively, with a cheerful 90's style look and feel and a decent enough amount of content. The simplicity and slight repetitiveness of the campaign, and the competitive mode not shaking up the formula makes it a game aimed more at series veterans than newcomers.

Fun, but far from an explosive reinvention.

Super Bomberman R is not worth the price of admission, but it is a surprisingly solid entry that plays best to the franchises strengths, rooted deep in multiplayer styles of play. While it does it's best to add value to the package, most of this content comes off as incessant filler. Online works, to a point, but if you're not grabbing Super Bomberman R for some fun multiplayer, it's probably best to skip it entirely.

Super Bomberman isn't the prettiest game in the long-running series, but its core multiplayer mayhem is as terrific as ever. [OpenCritic note: Jeffrey Wilson separately reviewed the PC (2.5 stars) and Switch (3.5 stars) versions. Their scores have been averaged.]

I think Bomberman is cool and cute, but this title is not the launch that the Nintendo Switch deserved. By either offering more new content or pricing the game reasonably, Konami could have jump started the Bomberman franchise, which has been MIA for years. Instead, Super Bomberman R just doesn't give the value or the fun that the price commands.

Bomberman R isn’t remotely a £50 game. It is, at its base, a solid entry in a much-loved franchise, and one that plays to the Nintendo Switch’s strengths, even if will require plenty of investment to get the most out of it. The current online woes also do little to make it feel like a well-rounded package, making it difficult to recommend to anyone but the most committed Bomberman fan.

Bomberman itself is still a classic, and works very well on the Switch, but the insanely high price makes this impossible to recommend.

Additionally, the game lacks innovation and feels pretty much the same as any other Bomberman you may have previously played.

Super Bomberman R’s multiplayer versatility and boss-filled story mode are laudable retreads of classic gameplay, but its depth and customizability are disappointing. By contrast, the aforementioned Bomberman Live was a brilliant, fully featured Bomberman for Xbox 360 that came out 10 years ago, and it only cost $10. It’s reasonable to expect a bit more from a $50 Bomberman game in 2017.

As nice as it is to see a long-dormant retro series return, Super Bomberman R's lack of creativity and unbalance issues result in it not feeling like the proper comeback it could have been.

As much fun as I had with Super Bomberman R, I can't ignore the flaws. Online battles don't even work, and the story mode has tons of flaws.

Good 'ol Bomberman is still crazy after all these years, but there's nothing really new, it lacks some options, the story mode is nothing exciting and the game is a bit too pricey.

Super Bomberman R goes big on multiplayer and brings the fun. The campaign however does not due to a weird balancing act. Thanks to fast gameplay and many characters there is plenty to do even though the in-game currency is way off.

Super Bomberman R is easily one of the most addicting games on the Nintendo Switch, especially considering its versatility, but it’s hard to justify its price.

It may not be a perfect game, but it’s still great for local multiplayer fun. If the online was more active, it would be a much better experience.
