Battlefield V ultimately feels like a lateral release with little pushing the franchise forward when you judge it by what's here and not what may or may not come.

EA DICE's latest shooter may be a bit rough around the edges, but it's also a grand and respectful foray back to the franchise's WWII roots

Battlefield 5 is without doubt one of the most perplexing video game releases of recent years.

The lack of polish in some of the systems will get improved with patches, but the missed opportunities with the campaign content frustrate the full package. But ultimately, this is one of the best multiplayer shooters you will play this year, and maybe the best until the next Battlefield. So if you love competitive FPS games, yes, you have to buy this.

This technical tour de force throws you into realistic second world war battles – shame it felt only 70-80% finished at launch

If DICE is telling the truth and Battlefield V develops into a long-term, always evolving online game, fans are in for a treat. The bones of BFV are robust. It looks outstanding, plays great, and the stories of World War 2 are a constant draw for history fans. There are rough patches for the time being, but if those get smoothed out and the content pipeline remains full, Battlefield V stands to have a very, very long shelf life with shooter fans.

The well designed maps, engaging approach to single player and wealth of progression and customisation options mean that even hardcore players will be satisfied. For fans of the series, this comes highly recommended.

The most visually stunning FPS game on the market right now with a thoroughly engaging multiplayer. Sadly, it still remains incomplete.

Boasting breathtaking spectacle and some of the most refined series multiplayer to date, Battlefield V's missing features prevent EA's latest from soaring to the heights that it deserves to. Nonetheless, DICE's latest shooter effort both maintains and enhances the series essence to stake its claim as one of the better FPS titles available on PS4.

At best this is the new reality of game service models. At worst EA rushed the game out in time for the holidays. Thankfully, even as some features are conspicuously absent, nothing else in Battlefield V feels rushed. It's a smooth experience, offering yet another audiovisual master class, and regularly delivers a true sense of spectacle in a way that other console shooters simply can't match.

As one of the best looking FPS on the market, nothing else can compete with the destruction and visual assault of Battlefield V. However, this great war stands incomplete with many features not yet available at launch.

Battlefield V is a good surprise with a new teamplay system (support by intelligent heal mecanics), more destruction, customization and specialization system for weapons and vehicles. Definitively Battlefield V is a monumental shooter desptite a conventional singleplayer (who stay interesting).

Battlefield 5 is a good game, but not a great one. The multiplayer can be great fun when you find the right server, and the single player shines a light on parts of World War 2 that aren't in the public consciousness.

What I can say with confidence, though, is that Battlefield fans now have two great current-gen shooters, one set in each of the World Wars to choose from. If you skipped Battlefield 1, or don't mind paying to jump to what will now be the actively supported game in the series for the next few years, Battlefield V is definitely worth picking up at some point.

Those that make the plunge and purchase Battlefield V will still have plenty to be excited about. There will be a little something for everyone, which will only get better with time and countless updates. Plus, if you're looking for an excuse to make your PS4 GPU scream, look no further. Who knew that the horrors of war could ultimately end up being so goddamn beautiful?

Battlefield V is not the revolutionary title DICE initially started out to create, and there are also some annoying technical kinks that should have been ironed out by now. Despite these drawbacks though, Battlefield V offers some of the most rewarding, visceral WWII action in any game out there thanks to genius little tweaks to gameplay and immersion, all produced with an audio-visual technical mastery that is second to none. With its free live-service component as well, the future for the franchise looks very good.

Battlefield V offers tremendous multiplayer experience but has an incredibly dull single-player campaign. Simply focus on playing online and everything will be fine. The developers have taken to heart all support received from players during beta tests and have fixed the most important issues.
