Godfall is a very good-looking game for your brand new PS5, very shiny, but the battle system and gameplay as a whole becomes very boring pretty quickly, as it has many many issues too.

The combat feels good, but that doesn't stop it from being an aggressively mediocre game that lifted most of its gameplay ideas from better titles. Play those instead.

Despite that less than acceptable end game experience, I can still recognise the glimmer of potential in Godfall. For a first outing, Counterplay has achieved something that's undeniably striking in the visuals department, though that's marred by sameiness and the odd, isolated framerate hitch. We also have an addictive loot game and a surprisingly deep RPG upgrade system here, though it's hamstrung by fisticuffs that don't nail down those all important fundamentals.

Godfall is all style and no substance. The next-gen lick of paint certainly makes it an exquisite looking stunner, however, at its core is some lacklustre gameplay and some genuinely lethargic missions. The boss battles are exciting and momentarily engaging, and the art style incredible, but I'm left feeling more than a little underwhelmed and unfulfilled.

Godfall's incredible visuals and stylish combat lift up an otherwise repetitive and bland hack n' slash adventure that lacks depth.

Godfall offers great combat and a variety of weapons, but without proper expansion. The creators have not exploited the potential of the created world and may no longer be given the opportunity to show its true character.

When you step away from the controller and really think about the cracks in its foundations, though, Godfall simply becomes another looter with a poor launch that can't seem to do much of anything right beyond being just fine. A terribly uninteresting story and a severe lack of content turns it into a game that will only provide you the bare minimum fun factor, and there's a lot better you can do with your time and money right now.

Godfall is the most monotonous title we've played in the last years. The short playtime, the missing replayability and no real effort to make the player care for the story and world are making Godfall the worst PS5 Launch Game.

The reality is that Godfall looks and plays like a next generation game, but it’s such a hollow experience. Honestly, it’s surprising how overwhelmingly average the game is, given that there are several positive aspects to it. Even for diehards of the looter genre, this is a tough one to recommend.

While Godfall did a great job of showing off how well games will look on the PS5, the lack of a lengthy campaign paired with repetitive endgame content really hurt a game and left me asking “what could have been”. With games now expecting us to shell out 70 USD for new games, we need to start holding these game studios to higher standards. Especially in this current economic environment with Covid-19 and not having a lot of extra income, I would have much rather spent my money else where to get the value of content I deserved.

Regardless of how satisfying the combat may be, it's only somewhat of a redeeming component to prevent the game from being a total letdown. Godfall has looting and it has slashing, to be sure, but you end up wading through so much to enjoy those parts. Perhaps loot fiends will get hooked on the endgame loop enough to stick around for a while, but what waits at the end is hardly worth the time it takes to get there.

Godfall had a lot going for it. It was unveiled as the very first PS5 release, adopted the moniker of a looter slasher, and looked to be the equivalent of Warframe when it first launched on PS4. Unfortunately, it fails to stand out as a must-play killer app for the newly released PS5. Boredom quickly sets in as you run around gorgeous yet incredibly lifeless locales, embark on tiresome quests, and get treated to a storyline that’s entirely forgettable. Godfall’s quality combat mechanics, healthy offering of cool looking loot, and slick looking Valorplate armors are sadly stuck within a lackluster shell of a game.

A visually stunning game, Godfall suffers from repetitive combat and a lackluster story that is forgettable after the first hour. In an industry with so many Dark Souls-style games, this is not one to spend time on.

Although it seems to have all the necessary components to become a compelling looter-slasher Godfall's fussy mechanics and repetitive design will quickly sap your interest.

While a bit muddled in combat design and pretty dull in world design, Godfall is a passable 3D action game. Under normal circumstances, you'd be safe to skip it, but if you need something to play on that shiny new PlayStation 5, it's not the worst option.
