Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has not chosen the path of evolution or transformation for the soulslike landscape, nor can it truly be considered a particularly unique take on the subgenre. However, it undoubtedly delivers an experience filled with finesse, engagement, and respect for the player. Many of the elements borrowed from the giants of the genre are implemented with care and the expected level of quality—not to feel like mere imitations or inferior versions of older titles, but rather to evoke a nostalgic sense of returning to that golden era. So I say this with confidence: for fans of soulslikes and those who enjoy challenge served with a touch of logic, Wuchang is a must-play.

China is on a roll and nothing can stop it! Maybe WUCHANG won’t create as much buzz as Wukong but it certainly left a stong impression on me with it’s brilliant level design, art direction and elegant action. It’s the soulslike game that has it’s own unique identity and hopefully a franchise starter like Nioh. Play it, you won’t regret it.

In terms of overall design, I really feel like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers falls firmly in the "solid and fun but not exceptional" category. While the boss fights are fun, they didn't knock off my socks. I had a good time with it, and it's a solid entry in the Soulslike genre. It does its job quite well, but it doesn't really stand out from the crowd, either. It has some great design choices. I hope to see other games in the genre adapt in the future, but otherwise, it's a fairly by-the-numbers Souls game that is a good time but a little too safe for its own good.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a well-crafted Soulslike that combines interesting ideas with some of the genre’s tried-and-true formulas to deliver around 50 hours of solid entertainment. A remarkably competent first game from another hugely promising Eastern developer, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has charm and grit in spades. It creatively reinvents the genre’s character progression template and serves up some extremely accomplished high-octane action gameplay that’s rich in flashy skills, impactful magic and dance-like precision. The scope of what’s on offer is made all the more appealing by the low price point: one that does a disservice to the breadth of content offered by this immaculate experience. For fans of action RPGs, this is a no-brainer.

The developer has done an amazing job with this mind-blowing title. Not only does it look great, but the controls are tight, the combat is impressive, and the grim world is amazing to explore. On top of this, it is included with the Game Pass subscription service. Accordingly, you have nothing to lose, and I suggest taking a look at the Xbox store!

Rather than feeling like a cheap imitation, however, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers comes off as a classy homage, demonstrating a keen understanding of what makes these games work, while also putting its own stamp on the genre with its dodge-centric approach to combat and accessible magic systems. Its opening hours may frustrate you in how risk-averse those initial sections seem, but bearing with Wuchang: Fallen Feathers ultimately reveals a deep experience that proves there’s still room for more soulslikes when the quality is there.

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers doesn't just slavishly copy the rules set by From Software, but introduces interesting and original features that give it its own voice within the souls genre. The dark Chinese fantasy setting is terrifyingly good, and the story of the beautiful pirate will keep you glued to your joypad. Overall, I enjoyed my time with Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. While the combat and level design don’t always live up to their full potential, it’s still one of the better soulslikes available. That said, if you’re not already a fan of the genre, the game’s inconsistent difficulty might be a tough barrier to entry. For instance, I defeated the first four bosses on my first try—and the same was true for some mid-game encounters. But then, out of nowhere, I’d be stuck on a boss for hours.
