Big Hops makes moving around the world an absolute delight, and then gives you flexible tools to make your own fun while exploring.

BIG HOPS succeeds because of the developers’ understanding of momentum, accessibility, and expression through movement: its systems constantly invite wacky experimentation with generous restarts, rather than punishing the player for failing, all of which reinforces a core philosophy of playful improvisation.

Big Hops is a good new 3D platformer that will draw plenty of fans with its fun abilities and locations to explore. My playthrough was affected by bugs, with patches coming to address some of these issues in the run up to launch, but there seem to be some teething issues that remain.

2026 begins brightly for the indie scene as Big Hops delivers tons of fun with its enjoyable platforming and vibrant world. The unique use of vegetables as items that help expand Hops repertoire, plenty of things to collect, and animals to meet along the way make the four biomes worth exploring. Big Hops is a 3D adventure you don't want to miss.

Like its adorable amphibian hero, Big Hops is charming and scrappy in equal measure. For all of the issues I faced during my playthrough – some squashed by patch work and others more fundamental – it's ultimately one of the most charming, playful, exhilarating and deeply funny adventures I've embarked on in some time.

With stability addressed I will have no doubt recommending this as an early contender for indie of 2026 on Switch and Switch 2. Until then, consider other platforms or double check that the launch day patch has hit. I'll be checking back in on Big Hops with the hopes of giving it the positive score it deserves, very soon.

Big Hops is a super-cute game that can be a lot of easygoing fun if you enjoy physics-based 3D platforming. However, its mostly empty environments, occasionally annoying glitches, and odd flimsy gameplay segments make it fall flat from time to time. 🐸

Big Hops is a welcome addition to the 3D platforming genre, taking us on a long, cartoonish adventure with creative mechanics, tools for traversal and entertaining narrative. The overall experience offers a pleasant level of freedom and experimentation, making it accessible to the general public and appealing to speedrunners.

Big Hops is a fun game that tells an unusual story with charismatic characters, features an excellent variety of exploration moves, showcases diverse and vast environments, and contains numerous collectible items. However, the many and frequent technical glitches hinder the title's potential to be even more addictive and rewarding. Ultimately, therefore, we are faced with a very complete and charming 3D platformer, but one that deserves more care and fixes to become a great success.

Big Hops did something interesting today: it charmed a player who is terrible at platformers into liking it. The gameplay offers plenty of variety with its different mechanics, and I’ve found the story and characters charming. If you fancy a new platformer game with both charm and depth, this is a great way to kick off 2026! It isn’t perfect, of course, with some irritating camera bugs, a general lack of customization for game settings, and some very frustrating moments at times. None of these are dealbreakers, however, and I can heartily recommend Big Hops both as a solid game in its genre and a great addition to the Steam Deck library.

While I enjoyed my time with Big Hops, it wasn’t the must-play I was expecting it to be. But there are plenty of elements in the game that really give Luckshot’s next platforming or puzzle project a lot of potential, provided they really focus on the fun of either side.

Ultimately, the tragedy of Big Hops is that it’s clearly so close to being a remarkable game. The gameplay mechanics and level architecture are fantastic, and I hope the team at Luckshot can bring over that same philosophy and design ethos to something a little more refined. Even if Luckshot fixes the crashes and frame rate issues, Big Hops has little to offer outside of its great gameplay mechanics. That’s not nothing, but it’s also not enough.

Big Hops is one of those games that simply makes you smile. It’s incredibly well put together, with movement that feels as good as anything else in the genre right now. The balance between story, exploration, and gameplay is spot on, and the sheer pleasure of moving through its worlds rarely wears thin. Plus, I was smiling the entire time I played it. It’s early in the year, but Big Hops has already put itself firmly on my radar as a game-of-the-year contender. It’s a reminder of how magical a great platformer can be when it gets the fundamentals right. Don’t let this one hop past your Steam library.

Big Hops is an experience rife with frustrating flaws. While it has elements that work well, such as the gameplay mechanics and narrative premise, it is undermined by a lackluster presentation, worlds that feel barren and empty, and numerous technical glitches. Further, because of these problems, I never wanted to find any of the collectibles. At the end of the day, it pales in comparison to other 3D platformers, whether indie or AAA.

Big Hops isn’t trying to reinvent 3D platforming. It’s refining a specific sensation; that satisfaction of staying in motion, of choosing flow over correction, and of trusting your hands to figure things out before your head does.

Big Hops is the kind of game that leaves you with a big, massive smile on your face when playing. Sure, it might stumble occasionally with a finicky camera and it’s not too tough, but it more than makes up for it with its charming world, sublime platforming, and creative ideas that’ll keep you hooked in front start to end. It really does feel like a thoughtfully crafted love letter to the genre, with Big Hops easily standing stand on its own two (webbed) feet amongst some of the greats of the genre. If you’re a platforming fan, you won’t want to skip this one.

BIG HOPS is a high-quality platformer that grants the ultimate freedom to players, allowing them to parkour their way through Hop’s journey with super-tight and inventive platforming sections. The characters and world are full of charm, and die-hard fans of the platforming genre will have plenty to love. The game is a tad bit too long, and some of the platforming sections could use some more hints and signposting to help give players some direction in times of confusion and frustration.
