Where Yoshi and the Mysterious Book really shines, though, is in the way it makes the player shift gears from simply playing the game to thinking about how the game functions.

Quote not yet availablYoshi and the Mysterious Book doesn't deserve to be dissected and analyzed coldly, otherwise its pure gameplay might show its limitations. Ultimately, the Yoshis' range of moves isn't particularly impressive, and the lack of difficulty and even combat can sometimes make the adventure feel a bit sluggish. e

The artistic vision, grounded in paper and pastel colors, is very pleasing, but the simple level design and overly timid sound design could dull the experience for more mature players. However, this is rewarded with a handful of concluding chapters that finally seem free from the yoke of accessibility at all costs.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a lovely, very unique, very delightful platformer, and I sincerely hope it represents the future direction for the series.

Even if Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is not for you, it’s hard to ignore the immense creativity that Good-Feel and Nintendo packed into this game. This puzzle platformer gives the player the warmest of hugs – hugs that make the player forget about their worries and leaves them with a big ol’ grin.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book will appeal to players who enjoy exploration and an experimental approach to gameplay, as well as those seeking a relaxing experience. Although I personally prefer a slightly greater challenge and more motivation to achieve 100% completion, I certainly don’t regret the dozen or so pleasant hours I spent playing the game.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is built to be explored in smaller chunks, something you can pick up and explore for as long as you’re curious.

It's not as cohesive, as adventurous, or as dangerous as it could be, but its unbridled creativity helps overcome those issues.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book feels like a bold reinterpretation of what a Yoshi game can be. It is less about reaching an end goal and more about slowly uncovering how a living world operates through curiosity and experimentation. It works best when you lean into that mindset and allow yourself to explore without expectation. While it may not satisfy those looking for a traditional platforming challenge, it succeeds as a thoughtful and creative experience that turns discovery itself into the main reward. It is an easy recommendation if you enjoy relaxed exploration and games that encourage you to experiment with everything just to see what happens next.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a brilliant, quirky experiment that proves being a dinosaur-shaped scientist can easily give traditional platformers a run for their money. If a cosy, unsupervised science fair full of "Eureka!" moments sounds like your jam, prepare your tongue for a new career in book-based ecology.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book's pages are bursting with life and creativity. Every stage contains completely original characters and imaginative gameplay ideas that ensure a unique experience from beginning to end, and it is impossible to deny the utterly delightful visual style and adorableness of Yoshi and his animations. It is just unfortunate that, although this is a great recommendation for younger gamers, the low stakes and lack of challenging platforming feel like core elements that are difficult to ignore the absence of. Despite that, this is one of the most expressive games in years and will bring out the joy in anyone.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book reimagines what it means to be a 2D side-scrolling platformer, focusing on exploration and experimentation rather than reaching a singular goalpost; further differentiating itself from the Super Mario Bros. series without fully reinventing the genre.

I appreciate that, in an industry obsessed with rewarding you every second and keeping you hooked like a carrot and stick, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book finds value in something much simpler: sparking curiosity.

You just know that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is speeding face-first into a relatively muted response from critics and consumers alike. They will appreciate the art style and energy, but we don’t really have a framework in gaming to properly celebrate the kind of experience that the game is.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book may look like another spin-off title, but it features new forms of gameplay. The unfolding levels and gameplay discovery are well worth it and it will please platformer fans as well as players open to experimenting within the genre. It boosts a ton of ideas and is far from just an easy kids' game this time.
