R-Type Dimensions III is an excellent remake of an absolute classic shmup. It presents the original in its best form, while also improving upon it in several ways. While I would have liked more attention paid to accessibility, the modes here do a decent enough job of letting me enjoy the game. That said, the improvements to the presentation and the two-player co-op mode are really compelling reasons to give this game a try.

R-Type Dimensions III revives a shoot ’em up classic with respect, brutal difficulty, and modern improvements, although bugs, collisions, and visual effects urgently need patching.

The big question, of course, is whether the game is actually fun under these circumstances. To be honest, without the Infinite Mode I would probably be giving this a yellow rating, as some enemy formations feel a bit too unfair and I found myself dying constantly. Thankfully, there is no death counter at the end—mine certainly would not have painted a flattering picture. Players who are willing to invest the time to learn the game’s mechanics, repeatedly practice, memorize formations, and understand proper positioning will likely find both a great deal of enjoyment and frustration here. For a more casual shmup player like myself, that would not have been enough, but fortunately the game provides an alternative through its accessibility options. Visually and musically, R-Type III left a very positive impression on me, and I am glad to have crossed another personal gaming blind spot off my list. Shmup veterans should have no hesitation picking this one up, and everyone else should try not to be intimidated by its difficulty.

R-Type Dimensions III fully understands the importance of the classic it's based on, but it doesn't always manage to translate that precision to its modern reinterpretation. When it draws on the original experience, it continues to demonstrate why R-Type III remains one of the great benchmarks of classic shoot 'em ups, although several inconsistencies in its visual and gameplay updates partially tarnish the result. Even so, it remains an interesting way to revisit this installment with some modern conveniences, especially for those who appreciate the methodical and demanding design that has always defined the series.

For people who loved the original, or who love a very specific challenge, this looks great and plays well… but it offers a very specific flavor of pain

R-Type Dimensions III is the definitive way to experience a notoriously difficult classic, blending a full 3D visual overhaul with essential modern quality-of-life additions like Infinite Mode and local co-op. While the original 1993 design can still be punishing, these updates remove the frustration that once defined the campaign, making it a must-play for both genre veterans and newcomers who were previously locked out by the brutal difficulty.

In the end, R-Type Dimensions III is a return built on contrasts: meticulous restoration and modern options on one side, and on the other a design that still carries the uncompromising difficulty of its era. It’s an experience that can fascinate fans of classic shoot ’em ups, yet may push away anyone looking for a more contemporary rhythm. Still, it remains a key piece of Irem’s history — a polished slice of gaming archaeology that, now as then, asks only one thing of the player: accept the challenge. Those who do will find a rough, coherent, and surprisingly lively game.

R-Type Dimensions III is a great remaster of an Super Nintendo classic. Challenging and rewarding gameplay will need your full attention and more, but it is fully worth it. The stage design is one of the best in the series, while the new 3D graphics are well done as well. However, the new music by Eric Krause steals the show – it is absolutely fantastic.

R-Type Dimensions III is a really strong revival of one of the genre’s standout shooters. The gameplay remains tense, rewarding and wonderfully unforgiving, while the updated visuals do a great job of modernising the experience without losing its retro identity. It absolutely will not be for everybody. The difficulty is intense even by retro shooter standards, and this is very much a game built around repetition, memorisation and gradual mastery. But if that style of arcade gameplay clicks with you, there is a lot to enjoy here. I do wish there were more extras included, especially at this price point, but the quality of the actual game still shines through very clearly. Even as somebody who is honestly not particularly amazing at shoot ‘em ups, I still had a great time with it. Sometimes getting blown up repeatedly can still be fun.

This is a pretty straightforward conversion. R-Type Dimensions III is not as exciting as its predecessor, as it’s only covering one game, instead of two, and said game just isn’t as iconic as the first few classic R-Types. It gives you all the (optional) presentation overhauls and accessibility options that you would expect and want.

I recommend R-Type Dimensions III for two types of players: those already familiar with shoot 'em ups or the R-Type franchise itself, and players who are very curious to explore classics of the genre and want a good entry point into one of the most iconic games on the Super Nintendo.

A faithful revival that reminds you why R‑Type’s challenge still matters. R‑Type Dimensions III is a faithful and lovingly rebuilt version of a classic that still knows how to challenge, frustrate, and reward in equal measure. Its modern visuals, enhanced audio, and instant switching between old and new styles make it a great way to experience one of the most iconic shooters ever made. The limited modes and extreme difficulty will not suit everyone, but for fans of old‑school arcade design or anyone looking to test their skills, there is a lot to enjoy here. Even with a few technical hiccups, the core experience remains tense, satisfying, and unmistakably R‑Type.

And if you haven’t played R-Type III before, you absolutely should. This is a solid way to do it, if only because it removes the slowdown endemic to the SNES version. R-Type Dimensions III is a loving renewal of an outstanding shoot-’em-up. I do wish that they found a balanced middle-ground for easing the difficulty beyond its all-or-nothing approach. As it is, you either feel pain or nothing at all.

R-Type Dimensions III is a fantastic remake of R-Type III: The Third Lightning. It might not quite be a 1:1 re-release of the game at points, but for the bulk of the experience, it’s one of the better and more friendly ways to experience a notoriously difficult title, thanks to the “Infinite” mode. It doesn’t quite offer the same value as R-Type Dimensions EX due to that compilation remaking 2 games instead of the 1 on offer here, but for die-hard R-Type fans, R-Type Dimensions III offers a solid challenge with enough quality-of-life enhancements to make it worth fighting through those tears and giving in to that infamous “one more go” addiction the series is known for.

R-Type Dimensions III is a standout remaster of an SNES classic. Its challenging gameplay demands total dedication, and the unique stage design remains just as memorable today as it was decades ago. While the graphical overhaul is visually pleasing, the inclusion of the original style as an option is a welcome touch for purists. Thankfully, the new Infinite Mode allows players of all skill levels to see the end, but even then, expect the journey to be filled with constant death.
