I can't recommend Monster Hunter: World enough to anyone who's after possible GOTY games. It's not just the best Monster Hunter game to date, I'm pretty sure it's one of the best titles of the year, and that's a big achievement for CAPCOM and this particular franchise mostly known in Japan.

Veteran players are going to find the biggest and most spectacular Monster Hunter to date, with all that that entails: one challenge after another and one of the best cooperative modes we know of. The new ones, a game that is about hunting very big bugs in which the story does not have much weight (or none), but in return offers us a practically perfect learning and progress curve, an exciting cooperative and an RPG with a extremely polished combat system.

Monster Hunter World is a hallmark entry into the storied franchise that will light a fire in the belly of any triumphant Hunter. While there are some excessively rare moments of frustration, each and every aspect of the game culminates in a viscerally satisfying cycle that keeps you coming back for more and more.

Despite a strong focus on accessibility and numerous quality-of-life improvements over previous titles, Monster Hunter: World still begs you to muscle through your initial struggles and build a comfort level with the gameplay systems and pacing. Should you find yourself slowly embracing the concepts, you may blink and notice hundreds of hours have been invested, with you now proudly calling yourself a fan. With a great multiplayer element, there are few games that are more fun to play with friends, but even going alone with your purring Palico sidekick, the satisfying routine of taking down monsters and using their bits to upgrade your gear to take on tougher monsters never seems to get redundant. This is the Monster Hunter game for the world. There is no better entry point for beginners and no better magnum opus for the series.

Monster Hunter: World is an episode worthy of the ambitions of Capcom's franchise, finally using modern platforms to do what was needed to upgrade the series, and able to attract both veteran hunters and newcomers. It clearly represents the future of the franchise, and we highly recommend you try it out, as it's a must-have whether you played any of the Monster Hunter games or not.

Monster Hunter World renews the hunts of the saga keeping the keys that made it great and unique, but with enough new features and adaptations so that all players can get closer to it. This is the most dynamic, intuitive, modern, funniest, and almost unlimited release thanks to its online features.

The other key loop in the game lies in all the armor you can craft, and the massive trees of weapon upgrades available. Most armor comes from harvesting parts from monsters, with some extra bits of ore or bone thrown in for good measure. Each set of armor comes with strengths to different types of elements, but what will surely sway many players between one piece and the next is the look; there are certain sets I still covet. Since there is no feasible way to get a full five-piece set from killing a monster one time, it takes multiple kills to collect all the scales, membranes, quills and pelts required.

If you've been skipping out on Monster Hunter games for a while because they seem to blend together, jumping into World is your chance to get in. Just know that Capcom hasn't really shaken up the formula enough to piss off veterans or appeal to people who don't welcome grinding with open arms.

This is the Monster Hunter game that will finally solidify the series in the West in the way it has been in Japan for over a decade and is a terrific experience from start to finish (if you ever truly get finished).
