It’s a game that will stay with you long after you’ve put down the controller, a haunting reminder of the fragility of life and the encroaching darkness that lurks just beyond the edge of our perception.

By the time A Plague Tale: Requiem concludes, it will feel like being dragged by a pick-up truck across miles of concrete. The world depicted is a bleak and cruel one with no light at the end of the tunnel. Players will be getting their money's worth, as this is a very long game that is punctuated with lots of gimmicky sequences that add value to the package. The story does have a lot for fans to discuss, and the visuals are amazing, even if they came at the cost of a high frame rate. The gameplay is technically better than the first, but it was never amazing to begin with. The over-reliance on prebaked contextual actions and the rigidness of simplistic stealth is something most could expect from a seventh gen console title, not a ninth gen console release.

A Plague Tale: Requiem may be one of the safest sequels to one of 2019’s most iconic titles, but it carries itself with all of the recognition it deserves. There are a couple of issues the game has, but all of these can be ironed out with hotfixes and patches down the line — these issues ultimately do not take away from the incredible experience the game offers. From graphical design through to combat, and even exploration, A Plague Tale: Requiem adds enough depth and nuance to make everything feel fresh, and is a worthy sequel.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is not a perfect game but it is a perfect example of how to take everything that's come before and improve all facets of its development. From the beautiful soundtrack to the stunning locales; from the thematically resonant story to the tight gameplay mechanics; Plague Tale: Requiem is an absolute joy to play through and easily one of this year's best games.

Several issues gnaw away at Requiem's greater potential, but its panoply of technical and creative positives connect consistently enough to thoroughly appreciate Amicia & Hugo's rat-ical journey.

Plagues, rats, war, illness, death and rats again. No, this is not a shopping list of everything needed for a great Halloween party, this is 14th-century France, and this is Amicia and Hugo’s story. Not just that, this is an adventure with so much to explore across islands that are shrouded in mystery, fantasy and grief.

It’s an amalgamation of picture perfect visual artform that can only be translated by a perfectly paced tale, that sole intent is to evoke and force a muck of sensations from one’s character and personality. Such an amazing experience, and deserves a plethora of accolades. Possibly Game of the Year.

The touching story of Amicia and Hugo has raised the level in a sequel that borders on perfection where the narrative and the variety of situations stand out.

Offering great visual spectacle but slightly marred by its pacing, A Plague Tale: Requiem is a worthy successor to the first opus.

A Plague Tale: Requiem follows the formula set by the first game with some improvements on top. The graphics are lovely, the story is engaging and rich and the audio is harmonic, but the performance leaves a bit to be desired.

Requiem improves everything that Innocence lacked during its first release. Without a doubt Asobo took note and reached new highs with this game. Unfortunately the performance isn't on par of what you would expect, that being said it still is a fantastic game that looks and feels like a AAA release from any big publisher in the market.

Although imperfect, Asobo Studio succeeds in telling a deep and intense story, managing to convey all the love for its characters. A journey inside the cruelty and abstractness of human nature, supported by a majestic graphic and artistic compartment. A story that will leave indelible memories in the minds of gamers.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is a triumph of a sequel that ticks all the boxes fans will be expecting and then some. Not only does it look and feel great, but it backs up its eye candy and abundant atmosphere with an interesting narrative and a stalwart protagonist who won’t quit. It’s everything a follow-up should be and more from an IP that’s grown precious to players over the years, and a fine adventure that even newcomers will find value in tackling.

With its striking production values and next-gen rat rendering, it's hard escaping the notion that A Plague Tale: Requiem is, like Microsoft Flight Simulator before it, more of a tech demo or portfolio piece for Asobo Studio. But for fans of the original, the prospect of more of the same – only bigger and flashier, and without the 'Allo 'Allo! accents – is certainly enticing.
