Funko Fusion had everything to be a great game for pop culture fans, but ultimately delivers a fun experience only for a more casual audience.

Funko Fusion is, unfortunately, a strong failure, which is a pity because the potential was definitely there, but it was by no means realized. A poor gameplay model, poor technical condition and a mediocre selection of franchises are just the biggest elements that went wrong, and unfortunately there is much more.

Funko Fusion reconstructs worlds extracted from films, cartoons and series with discreet effectiveness on the aesthetic front. The character models are also of good quality, as are the effects. Unfortunately, the gameplay, fights and puzzles are much less cared for and perhaps the most serious deficiency is yet another: the game has little soul, and exploits less than it should the action figures involved. In short, it would have been better not to let the Funko Pops come to life. They are much better still on our shelves.

Unlike the actual figures, your enjoyment of Funko Fusion isn't just going depend on whether you like the franchises or characters that made the cut. You have to be a fan of the constant backtracking and revisiting of worlds needed to unlock the better secrets. You need to be forgiving of some of the faults in the combat system. You also have to be fine with this being a strictly single-player game and patient enough to wait for the complete online-only multiplayer experience to be available. If you are, then you'll have fun with the game. Otherwise, you might want to wait to see if patches smooth out some of the existing issues.

My Funko Fusion score is more positive than first expected, and the current state of the game is recommended for sure.

My primary feeling about Funko Fusion is confusion. Funko Pops and their design often appeal to children, and Funko Fusion feels like it should be a kid's game by its design. The game seems to tiptoe around the area of violence in some worlds, and then straight up lets you blow people's heads off with a shotgun and blood splatter a few moments later in another world. At this point, I wonder if Universal dictated to the developers what was and wasn't allowed to be portrayed concerning certain IPs. While this isn't a dealbreaker in itself, it highlights a problem throughout Funko Fusion: the game seems to have many half-baked ideas. Still, the dev team lacked the time or imagination to carry them out. The visual presentation and the technical aspects, such as movement and mechanics, work fine. The problem is that the puzzles are repetitive and tedious, the combat feels hollow, and many missions worldwide are variations on finding lost animals or defeating a series of minibosses. Performance on the Steam Deck is at least decent. You can play Funko Fusion at 40 FPS if you run the lowest settings, with the option to go down to 30 FPS to save some battery life. The controllers also work great, although some of the text in speech bubbles may be hard to read sometimes.

Funko Fusion is a fun and nostalgic game that will appeal to fans of Funko Pop figurines and the franchises it represents. While it has its share of technical issues and repetitive gameplay, the colorful worlds, charming character designs, and humor make it an enjoyable experience. With the upcoming online play feature and regular updates, Funko Fusion has the potential to become even more engaging and entertaining in the future. The game’s ability to bring together different franchises into a single, cohesive universe is a testament to its creativity and charm. Whether you’re a fan of Scott Pilgram, Masters of the Universe, or any of the other franchises featured in the game, Funko Fusion offers a delightful and nostalgic journey that is sure to entertain and captivate players.

On paper, Funko Fusion had the potential to become a strong and perhaps more mature competitor to the LEGO franchise. However, the lack of diversity, the repetitive objectives, the numerous technical problems and the absence of a local co-op mode all detract from 1010 Games' idea. While the universes offered are original to say the least, they are not sufficiently linked to offer a coherent universe. In its current state, it's very difficult to recommend the game!

If you’re a fan of the vast majority of franchises in Funko Fusion, you’ll have an incredible time playing through the game. However, if you aren’t then I’m not sure how appealing this game is going to be for you. Fortunately for the game I am a massive fan of the included worlds and as such enjoyed every second of my play time. Playing through the worlds that I have either grown up with (The Thing) or just from my favourite movies (Hot Fuzz) was an absolute joy. Thankfully for all gamers out there a recent patch also made it easier to unlock worlds and expand your gameplay. Funko Fusion receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award.

Funko Fusion is unfortunately a complete disaster. The title did not meet my expectations, disappointing me practically in every aspect. Bringing the game to a playable state will take at least several more months, and that's just part of the game problems. The gameplay is unengaging, boring, and the chosen brands are for the most part not interesting enough to forgive the title any flaws. Stay away. It's better to return to LEGO once again than to play Funko. Do not buy under any circumstances.

Overall, Funko Fusion looks, plays, and runs like an Unreal Engine fan project, while simultaneously having no charm of its own or any real art style aside from the game’s characters being Funko vinyls. The game’s attempts to replicate more popular things fall flat and don’t feel in sync with any of its source materials, as it fails to deliver anything interesting.

There's just too much to fix to make Funko Fusion worth your time. Even if all the broken issues were fixed, the onslaught of enemies, the confusing puzzles, and zero incentive to help the player will remain. Even after several patches to balance some of these issues, the overall product remains the same, and so will the fundamental issues affecting it.

Funko Fusion is much like the Pop Vinyl brand that it represents: A lot of brands on board with a lot of potential for fun to be had with the product, but ultimately most of the time this game will sit on a shelf gathering dust because of cheap production on the product and nothing much to do with it once it is out of the box.

Funko Fusion throws everything it can on the wall with the hope that something sticks, but unfortunately for the developers and the audience alike, nothing is left on the wall after the first couple of hours. Funko Fusion is fast-paced, action-packed, and colorful, but it also lacks identity, is shallow, and is not appealing.

A well-crafted aesthetic and a distinct sense of humor aren’t enough; Funko Fusion is a half-baked effort in terms of gameplay and level design. A LEGO wannabe that lacks both the compelling gameplay that made the TT Games series popular and a clear sense of how to engage its target audience.

The devs did well to recreate the look and feel of the worlds I played in but this was not enough to save Funko Fusion. Just like your Funko Pop collection, sad and long forgotten, I can see this game sitting around for years to come collecting dust.

The truth is that the game is a nod to collecting and those who like the bobblehead toy line will understand the charm of the game more immediately than those people who are not so close to the collectible figures. If you're in the first group, you'll be pleased to know that Funko is releasing a number of Pops that include a code that you can change in-game to get new characters. First-rate marketing wherever you see it.

Funko Fusion is a perfect example of a game that had exceptional potential for the geek world but ended up as shovelware with a notable lack of creativity. Alongside a few other misses, it could easily serve as a case study for what not to do in the game development world.

Considering the mature sense of humor and somewhat obscure references, the simplistic gameplay loop and premise don’t fit at all with its “charming” Lego-esque vibes. There are so many sections that miss the mark, and this game relies fully on the series names and characters that are in it. Some of them might be neat, but rarely do they feel like a reason for you to even consider picking the game up. Add in game breaking bugs, softlocks and more, and there’s basically no reason to give Funko Fusion a go, even for an ironic playthrough.
