In a saturated market with games clambering to echo the soul of Animal Crossing, Hello Kitty Island Adventure has finally grabbed that baton and ran with it. It ticks every box in what I want from this genre, chucking every possible game mechanic at the player to play around with so there's never a dull moment, and probably won't be for quite a while. My only gripe is that I had to stop playing it in order to write this review!
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is the perfect cozy time sink. Now that it is on Nintendo Switch and PC, its rich world and consistent updates will make it a part of my regular rotation.

It's colorful and cozy, and packed with things to do and discover — as long as you can overcome its faults.
Island Adventure is far from perfect, but it’s also a genuinely fun experience that, when it gets things right, it gets them very right.
Before today, most Kitty games came across as a cheap effort to extract more cash from that lucrative product, but Hello Kitty Island Adventure is different. This is a genuinely worthwhile use of your time, and the fact that it’s also free of predatory microtransactions is the sweetener on top.
Hell, I'm excited to log back in to do my dailies! I always kind of understood the Animal Crossing series, but Hello Kitty Island Adventure is what I've always wanted them to be. At this rate, I better start shopping at the local Too Cool store for Badtz-Maru merch. That character just gets me.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure is exactly what you think it is. A Sanrio character filled Animal Crossing. However, this isn’t a negative. There is comfort in knowing exactly what you’re going to be doing when you sit down to play this. Do some quests for people, fix up an island and make more friends. This game could fill the void the lack of a new Animal Crossing game has created. Especially if you’re a Hello Kitty fan. My only reservation about the game is its price point. Whilst I appreciate games have increased prices over the years I ultimately had to ask myself if I would have paid £36 for this one. And I’m not sure if I would have. I certainly wouldn’t pay the £54 for a non-physical deluxe edition. It’s cute, and fun, and I loved interacting with my favourite Sanrio characters, but the price still feels a bit high for a cosy game with such simple gameplay. Then again based on the “£1 per hour of gameplay” model, and with 80+ hours worth of gameplay you could well get your monies worth from it. Wait, did I just talk myself around? Ok so maybe the price isn’t that bad, but still, I do wonder if it would become a bit too much of the same thing over time. In any case, Hello Kitty Island Adventure receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure isn't just a quick cash-in on the popular IP. The game feels like it was made by a team that knew how beloved the IP was and has been careful to retain its charm while also offering a complete and competent game that's perfect for kids and that adults will likely enjoy, too. It also runs great on the Steam Deck, with fully working controls and easy-going system requirements that mean you get plenty of battery life to explore your tropical island. It's a great way to relax at the end of the day.
In the end, Hello Kitty Island Adventure is an excellent game to de-stress. Even with a few technical issues here and there, overall, it offers an excellent experience for people who like casual, relaxing games, and it's no doubt a title worth experiencing by the fans of Hello Kitty and friends.
