While it bears surface-level similarities to Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian's created a deeper and more meaningful role-playing experience in The Outer Worlds.

There is no doubt that The Outer Worlds is a decent RPG with tons of interesting missions, and I really enjoy my 30 hours spent in the game. But I think Obsidian could have done better in terms of storytelling.

The Outer Worlds cements itself as an incredibly memorable RPG. Obsidian has built a vibrant and freeing world that is fresh, exciting, and ripe with galactic potential that will hopefully continue being explored in sequels. Even with its shortcomings, its easy to see Obsidian's newest RPG bordering on instant classic status.

Even with these unfortunate and evident shortcomings on the technical side, The Outer Worlds is a rewarding and ultimately intriguing adventure to partake in.

The Outer Worlds is a competent and well-acted action-RPG with some interesting ideas but one that mostly plays safe. While it doesn't quite reach the heights of Fallout: New Vegas, it certainly cements Obsidian Entertainment as an RPG force.

The Outer Worlds is a hugely entertaining "Fallout-in-space"-style RPG adventure filled with wonderfully vibrant locations, excellent companions, zippy and hilariously brutal combat and a ton of well-written characters to meet as you attempt to save the colony of Halcyon. Virtuos has made the expected tweaks to graphics in order to keep things as smooth as possible with this Switch port and, although things can look and feel a little rough in docked mode, in handheld this is a supremely enjoyable experience that's entertained us just as much this time around as when we played it at launch, and comes highly recommended to fans of the genre.

In the end, I enjoyed the 40 hour ride through the The Outer Worlds, even though it was sometimes a bumpy one. Still, with the interesting world that was built here, it feels like there was left a lot of untapped potential on the road. Flaws similar to the Fallout series – namely a main story that is little more than a frame holding together the sandbox that the rest of the game is and correspondingly flat characters – prevent it from earning a place in the hall of fame of roleplaying-shooters next to Mass Effect.

With a wacky dark humour, an expansive upgrade system and branching storylines that make every action feel significant, Obsidian Entertainment looks to set a new bar for RPG games.

The Outer Worlds is a great space opera action-RPG, with some great art, a lot of humor, and mechanics similar to Fallout, which can please the fans... by the creators of Fallout !

As a more compact Fallout-like experience The Outer Worlds really works, and I’m already hoping that we’ll get to return to the Halcyon Colony again someday.

Old at heart but young in spirit, The Outer Worlds is a vibrant and stunning new chapter from Obsidian that doubles down on what the studio does best and throws in some surprisingly fun gameplay on top of that.

Obsidian set out to make a Fallout game, but didn't think we'd mind if they actually made it a Firefly game along the way. So now we have an anti-capitalist Firefly mired in labor issues but elevated by rapidfire gunplay, peppered with chuckles from a tryhard sense of humor.

The Outer Worlds is one of the most polished and best games of this type, undoubtedly helped by the smaller scope. Focusing and doubling down on the right areas while telling a story that often asks thought-provoking and difficult questions, the game provides a memorable time without overstaying its welcome.

The Outer Worlds is an interesting role-playing game that is designed for fans of smart dialogues and nonlinearity. If you are one of them, you can safely try the game. However, Obsidian again lacked a budget, which by the end of the narrative becomes all too obvious.

The Outer Worlds looks an awful lot like Fallout in space, but a bigger emphasis on roleplaying helps it feel different to the Bethesda beast, even if the satire occasionally falls flat

Such great groundwork has been laid here that we can’t wait to play a new game in the franchise - we just hope it zeroes in on more of a bespoke personality by then. For now, we’ll console ourselves by replaying it again.

The Outer Worlds might not be exactly what you think it's going to be.  It's a smaller game, one that focuses on replay value and role play fantasy to really get the most out of the experience.  It's a dense game though, where there's plenty of lore packed into smaller sandbox style areas.  It's up to you to poke around in the corners of these areas to get the most out of it.

Obsidian offers a new videogame that brings back the outstanding first person RPG gameplay from Fallout New Vegas. However, due to some flaws, this game also feels like it's from 2010, making it a bit obsolete from its very launch date.
