Quake is a seminal shooter that helped define the genre, but it's definitely starting to show its age. It's well worth experiencing the campaign, but its design and enemy placement can occasionally feel unfair. Just as well, the multiplayer is difficult to get into if you're not already familiar with it.
Revisiting Quake has been both a nostalgic trip for me as well as rekindling my thirst for new games in the series. I hope this remake spawns interest in the franchise and we see a proper new game in the franchise very soon. At $10 this is an easy recommendation and if you have Game Pass it is included, so there is no excuse not to give it a go.
Enemies are visually grotesque, and their blinding-rage aggression makes for an experience that, even if you’ve played previously, is a challenging experience. You have to make the most of all your weapons, although the classic strategy of “use your shotgun as often as possible” remains viable. Ditto for the rocket launcher, the weapon most closely associated with the game.
Rather than score the game itself, what follows is an evaluation of the remaster. On that front, this is a fantastic release. I ran into a slight snag running it on the PS5, but that was it. Between the five campaigns, the console mods, and the multiplayer, this is a lot of bang for your buck. The controls are intuitive, the graphics are crisp, and the soundtrack is still excellent. I wish you weren’t tied to your Bethesda login, but that’s a grievance I can live with. As far as versions of Quake go, this one is exemplary. The platonic ideal, one might say. If you’ve found yourself missing those frantic, gib-centric days of chunky violence and blistering speed, Quake Remastered is exactly what you need. You really can’t get more Quake than this.
Arguably the modern template for so many self-styled retro shooters, Quake has returned in stunning form. A stellar remaster, Quake not only maintains the essence of id Software's classic 1996 shooter, but it meaningfully iterates upon it too with all new additional content, mod support and crossplay. At a super budget price point, there is no reason to dive into one of the very best 3D shooters of all time.
Quake Remastered or simply this new version of Quake is a success to put back in today one of the greatest classics in the history of the video game. Technically it has gotten a very interesting facelift and that brings it up to date enough to discover that the title is still just as fun as the first day. However, some bad startup settings or a clear focus on the PC version, leave in evidence problems with the controls with the controller, which does not end up feeling comfortable after the adjustments we have indicated, something that is aggravated with the multiplayer, which I do not directly recommend on console.

After reviewing Quake, I feel it's still an incredible game that holds up well even today. You get a ton of content for the price, and on top of that, there's so much replayability between the various difficulties and multiplayer options. While I wish some effort would have been made to modernize some archaic elements, they don't take away too much from the overall experience. If you're a fan of shooters at all, Quake should absolutely have a place in your Switch library.
For those who have never played Quake, the remastered is an unmissable opportunity to fill this gap and to appreciate one of the subjective shooters that marked an era. Carmack and Romero with their desire to innovate (and their quarrels!) have taken the video game industry into a new dimension: Quake is the game that has marked - indelibly - the history of id Software.

Quake returns in a feature-rich remaster that delicately updates the classic FPS, adding lots of optional bells and whistles, packing in a ton of content and delivering the definitive way to play this 25-year-old masterpiece in the process. There's a wealth of online and co-op options here, a glorious new expansion to blast through from MachineGames, super slick performance in both docked and handheld modes and it's all available at a cracking price point. This really is a stellar port of one gaming's true greats and an absolutely essential addition to your Switch library.
I’m just about beside myself with how cool and surprising of a release Quake Remastered is. I hope we’ll see the same treatment for Quake II down the road, but wow it’s really special to see this classic revitalized and given such good treatment in the process. Bravo to Bethesda, id, and Nightdive for doing such a great job with this release and offering it up to the masses at a price (just $10!) that you shouldn’t miss.
An updated version for modern hardware, Quake (2021) is the definitive way to revisit an FPS classic.
Quake Remastered is the perfect return of an instant classic: if you've never played the game in the '90, this is the chance of your life.

Nightdive Studios do a fantastic job with Quake Remastered. The 1996 classic lives yet again with some new tricks to boot.
It may be remembered for becoming the arena multiplayer game, Quake began as an incredible successor to Doom. With Quake Remastered, gamers can finally realize just how important Quake is, and how it’s still a boomer shooter masterpiece.
A huge shot of nostalgia for those who grew up on classic FPS games, this 90s throwback is more than accessible for modern gamers, however the lack of any narrative to keep you engaged may be off-putting to some.
Quake is one of the best games of all time and the remaster basically offers everything you could wish for. However, the controls may displease hardcore gamers.
