If you love Croc, and love the idea of playing a polished version of the original game in 2025, that last part doesn’t really matter. All that matters is the remaster is faithful to the original and improves upon it.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos wasn't exactly a revolutionary entry in the 3D platforming genre even back when it released, and though it still doesn't necessarily 'wow' us today, it certainly is an entertaining and worthwhile adventure. Things like the new controls, enhanced presentation, and extensive museum content are satisfying additions, and the core adventure itself is still good retro 3D platforming fun, warts and all. We'd give this a strong recommendation to any fans who have fond memories of playing this on a CRT back in the day, and even if this would be your first time playing it, we'd still suggest you give it a shot if you've been through the best 3D platformers the Switch has to offer and still want more. Croc is a solid, if unspectacular retro adventure, and stands as a worthwhile addition to the Switch library.

Unfortunately, Croc: The Legend of The Gobbos really never needed to come back. Even in 1997, it was a title plagued by cumbersome controls, generic worlds, and uninspired level design that were left behind by its more prolific contemporaries.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster is a good look at how 3D platformers were put together in the 90s, but the gameplay falls seriously short of modern standards. There is just so much that could be better when it comes to the gamplay that would have made the experience more tolerable and enjoyable, but what we have is a bang average 3D platformer.

While the game itself inevitably shows its age with its simplistic design, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remains an adorable and fun platformer in this remaster. The revamped visuals pop while staying true to its old school look, and the analog control provides a much smoother way to play. The Crocipedia fleshes things out, providing lots of detail about the making of this pioneering 3D title.

Croc's levels feel dated amongst it's contemporaries today but that doesn't stop it from being a cheerful journey from the adventure's beginning to it's triumphant conclusion.

While the Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster is a love letter to the original, packed with passionate behind-the-scenes features and a beautiful visual update, it's hard to ignore that platforming has come a long way since 1997. The gameplay is clunky and simplistic compared to the experiences we've come to expect today. But for those who remember the days of tail-whipping, saving Gobbos, and hopping around the colourful worlds of Croc, this remaster is pure nostalgia gold.

Despite the kinks and knitpicks, Legend of the Gobbos will endear players with its accommodating easiness, making it a lovely, gentle and ideal welcoming to retro gaming for children, while giving adult retro lovers a pleasing blast from the past to indulge in. It's not perfect obviously and it lacks the inspiration and magic of its contemporaries, but all the same it was a good game for its time that deserves to be experienced. The remastering effort on display here is lovely and should certainly entertain and please gamers young and old. A legendary platformer it may not be, but Legend of the Gobbos is certainly a worthwhile adventure that's returned with a solid remastering effort.

The Switch version specifically doesn't really come with any compromises, offering the highest possible image quality and frame rate available on the platform. Croc is still a very simple platformer and obviously the original game design has not been changed, but it is presented here with a level of respect and admiration that only its original developer and avid fans could provide. Even if you don't particularly like Croc, it's hard not to recommend this excellent package.

The Croc remaster is the definitive version of a classic that was already very competent! The new version makes what was already a simple but charming game even better, with reworked visuals and a control scheme remade for the current generation.

In a sea of unnecessary remasters, Croc is a breath of fresh air and a game that actually warrants a remaster. I have had so much fun going back to this classic game. It’s been the most fun I’ve had in a while and is easy to just pick up and play. I have given Croc the Thumb Culture Platinum Award because I had fun every second I was playing. I think the flashing gems need adjusting by the devs to make the game easier on the eyes. Aside from that, this game was perfect. It deserves nothing less than the platinum because it clearly isn’t planning on giving me one!

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos Remastered is a heartfelt revival of a cult classic, bringing the beloved reptilian hero back to life with a blend of nostalgia and modern refinements. While some aspects of the original game can feel a little uninspired, the graphical enhancements, smoother controls, and wealth of bonus content ensure that this remaster offers a very special trip down memory lane. If you’re a Croc fan, you can easily add an extra point onto the score down below, because it’s clear a lot of love and care went into this release. And if you never played it? This is a wonderful way to experience one of the most delightful platformers from the days of the PSOne.

Besides some dated boss battles, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos Remaster shows that the original game is still leagues above some of the best that Sonic and Mario have to offer. Many will disagree, but that is just conditioned bias. Croc is a nostalgic blast of absolutely epic proportions.

Crocs simplistic story and gameplay felt very much like it's own thing especially back in 1997 among other games at the time but the remaster of this game makes a lot of the flaws more noticeable sadly. It still is very much a charming game in it's own right and it was nostalgic if anything to play again especially with the soundtrack that remained untouched. I still hope the team decide to do a Remaster of Croc 2 as I can see they are passionate to the fans and who knows we may see Croc 3 one day in all its glory.
