Somehow, the Lunar games still hold up in 2025. While not perfect, they're still well-written and highly engaging JRPG classics that have stood the test of time thanks to mechanics and features that were ahead of their time. For the most part, the graphical enhancements have only improved the quality of the experience, with only some of the upscaling techniques getting in the way of the enjoyment.

The Lunar Remastered Collection respects the enhanced PS1 versions while also making a few tweaks to modernise parts of each game. While not all changes are entirely successful, and there are other aspects that haven't aged particularly well, we can't deny that Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue are bursting with charm and wit that many RPGs today lack. They might not revolutionise the genre, but if you're looking for a good time and have a little patience, you can do far, far worse.

For the most part it’s a success, opting for more of a restorative, hands-off approach meant to make it look like a literal widescreen conversion of a PlayStation game. There are some unfortunate pain points that keep a great re-release from being a total slam dunk, but the other side of that is a brand-new dub that makes up for the awkwardness with its high quality and reverence for the original.

The Lunar games embody everything that's nostalgic about 90s JRPGs, from the fun characters and colourful fantasy worlds, to the glorious spritework and catchy music. That said, Lunar's underlying grind can make it difficult to stomach here in 2025 - especially when the Lunar Remastered Collection doesn't do enough to mitigate the series' most tedious aspects. It's great to experience these games again - a fully deserved revival - but it's a real shame that the collection isn't flush with more helpful features.

This is a great compilation of two breezy and iconic representations of anime-styled fantasy JRPGs in the 1990s.

Lunar Remastered Collection is a loving remaster that understands the assignment and doesn't fix what isn't broken.

It's still a delight to play both Lunar games, as they are innocent and delightfully simple in their plots, but also full of unforgettable characters and emotions, but this package does the bare minimum to make them palatable also for newcomers and not only for nostalgic players. Also, why French and German subtitles and no Italian localization?

Lunar Remastered Collection is a faithful and tasteful compilation with restrained additions. The gameplay is untouched for the most part and the most noticable QOL feature is the battle speed controls. Speeding through fights is a godsend for getting through inconsequential battles or grinding.

These retro experiences really are predominantly for existing fans, after all, and Lunar was especially well-known for having deluxe collector’s editions back in the day. Something a little more luxurious than a menu with “remake” and “classic” modes would have been nice.

Lunar Remastered Collection is exactly what it needs to be: a comfortably nostalgic revisit to a comfortably nostalgic pair of games. Neither breaks the mold, but they remain charming and fun enough that they don't overstay their welcome. The remastering is done with a light touch, and there are times when I wish it had gone further, particularly with the translations. It does well enough to make it the best version of the games to pick up. Sometimes you just need an adventure, and Lunar delivers that in spades.

There's so much more that could accompany a package like this in addition to combat speed, a cleaner look, and widescreen presentation. Original English VO, missing games, art work, orchestrated soundtrack or even quality of life gameplay improvements could have pushed this to the high standards that companies like Square Enix and Capcom have set. I am happy that Lunar can now reach more people, but I long for more to share from such a cult classic and one of my all time favorites.

LUNAR Remastered Collection is a fantabulous package of 2 of the best lighthearted retro RPGs ever made. With impeccable localisation that's filled with hilarity, bubbly characters, and unforgettable moments; I highly recommend this compilation to all of my fellow merry chums. 🌟

Strictly as a collection, the Lunar Remastered Collection is an excellent package. You have both games of a classic yet hard-to-obtain duology in a single, highly accessible collection. There are enough touch-ups to account for the different sensibilities of all kinds of JRPG fans around today. The fact that there are Classic and Remastered options which can even share save files is an especially nice treat. Still, the core of each game is kept gracefully intact from their PS1 counterparts. As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Lunar 1 and 2 don’t offer particularly deep games in their systems and their stories are a bit on the simple and straightforward side. While this lowers the upper ceiling of the games for me, they have a high enough floor that I still enjoyed my playthrough plenty. They also make up for their simplicity with a charming and engrossing world and interconnected narrative between the games, while having some fun characters and dialogue. This collection serves as an excellent way to experience these fan-favorite RPGs, whether it be for the first time or just a trip down memory lane.

You can now enjoy Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue in a single title. While there aren’t major visual upgrades, the cleaner presentation, still-impressive animation, and added battle speed options make for a much smoother experience. Though many aspects of the game feel dated, for those with fond memories, it’s like the heart-fluttering feeling of meeting a first love all over again.

The way both Lunar games use to tell their stories is really unique, even if it may be my first time playing them, I was deeply touched by their characters like Alex, Luna, Hiro and Lucia. With it's hand-drawn animation that compliments it's narrative, I hope more RPG fans give this franchise the attention it deserves.

The Lunar Remastered Collection combines two of the most beloved titles of the 90s into one package that should be part of your library, especially if you are a fan of RPGs. While straightforward and predictable, both storylines are worth seeing, with a memorable cast of characters and a superb soundtrack to bring things together. Sadly, we would have liked to see more quality-of-life improvements in this release. Apart from the visual enhancements and the battle speed modifier, this collection is a bit light on features that would have made a big difference. Nevertheless, the Lunar Remastered Collection is a great time, especially when taken on the go, like the Steam Deck or the Nintendo Switch.

While Lunar Remastered Collection can sometimes feel a little barebones in its features and improvements, simply having these two JRPG classics available again is reason enough for its existence.
