Exit the Gungeon isn’t a sequel, nor does it pretend to be. I still find 2016’s Enter the Gungeon to be a fuller experience, with more depth and variety. Exit the Gungeon is not a game you should ignore. This Gungeon may have lost a little bit of itself along the way, but enough of its humor and sensibilities are very much intact for enjoying Dodge Roll’s twist on the Gungeon formula for the price point. Exit the Gungeon is a delightful spin-off, a blast to play, and the changes to the gameplay compliment the new perspective wonderfully.

I found myself looking at a pile of things that seemed like they would be fun, like there was a fun game under everything else, but the whole thing needed another few passes at the design stage to actually get out that fun game.

While Exit the Gungeon may be incredibly punishing, it may also be more inviting to new players than Enter has ever been. Returning fans, on the other hand, will have a grasp of the base mechanics, but will be far from masters of the new form of gameplay, making Exit inviting to everyone who’s a fan of the genre and style.

Exit the Gungeon was a uniquely suited mobile game, finding a perfect home on Apple Arcade. It’s translated nicely to PC and Switch, though it lacks some of the spark which made Enter such a cult classic. Random weapon changes, lengthy reloading of guns, and some overly harsh boss battles which lack the sense of strategy the original game made famous spoil things a little bit.

“Exit the Gungeon is an enjoyable distraction that serves as a spin-off to the more welcoming Enter the Gungeon. The random weaponry and tighter quarters often makes this more about luck than skill, which will grind against some players.”

Singlecore and Dodge Rol goes one step further to break the barriers of what is or what isn’t considered a roguelike / lite. And, while Exit the Gungeon might feel a little cramped at times, it packs as much punch and excitement as Enter the Gungeon.

Devolver Digital seems to always bring the goods to the table, and I'm pleased to report that Exit The Gungeon is no different! A pixel roguelite shooter that peppers in a heavy bit of bullet hell, this title will do all it can to make you bend your knee to it. Exit The Gungeon is fantastic, brutal and we've got it in the palm of our hands with the Nintendo Switch version.

Let’s end by setting the record straight, because I’ve seen enough comments about this game already that I feel it necessary; Exit the Gungeon is not Enter the Gungeon. It literally says that it’s a “small, spin-off” in the Steam page description. Does that mean that it’s completely perfect? Definitely not; some of the levels are a bit too tricky for their own good, and the randomly changing gun mechanic can really hurt you if the game doesn’t play nice (which it often won’t). The devs seem to be very well aware of this, however, and seem to be actively making changes based on player feedback. And that fact, combined with how enjoyable the game already is, makes it a worthwhile pickup if you’re in the mood for something cheap (I’m mostly talking about price), challenging, and charming.

Exit the Gungeon offers an enjoyable take on its predecessor’s established formula, with the frantic action and bite-sized nature of the game making for some thrilling escapades as you attempt to leave the treacherous Gungeon. That’s not to say that it’s perfect by any means though, with the random nature of the guns and the simpler premise of the game bringing some frustrations to the mix here and there. For the most part though, Exit the Gungeon offers another fun foray into the titular Gungeon and I’m sure most gamers won’t want to be leaving it too soon…

Exit the Gungeon has maintained the same degree of challenge since it was launched, in which skill and good luck are still the main ingredients for the player to triumph. Small additions introduced by the Hello to Arms update, such as new weapons, new mechanics and a new boss, are welcome, adding a little new dynamics to the game and allowing players to have a little more freedom to choose how to fight the enemies.

The game is definitely recommended if you were a fan of Enter the Gungeon or rogue-lites in general, but there are better options if you’ve never played a game from the genre before.

I would say that Exit the Gungeon is a fun game but also quite tough, so do not immediately lose heart in this bullet hell, especially if roguelikes are a genre that you like and do for you.

Exit the Gungeon changes the formula of an already fun game. Even if it was developed for Apple Arcade first, the game feels pretty good and fun in console and keeps the same charisma of the original one.

While I'm not as massive a fan of Enter the Gungeon as some are (given the choice I'd typically pick Nuclear Throne, but I get why Gungeon is popular) I have a great deal of respect for it and easily count it as one of the top roguelike shooters in the indie space...

Exit the Gungeon is, at its best, a fun but shallow shooter, which doesn’t really deliver on its appealing premise. But if you’re prepared to take this light and fluffy sidequel for what it is, there’s still joy to be had on your way out of the Gungeon.

The lack of accessibility and alienation of new players makes the experience more frustrating than it should be. For lovers of the original, Exit the Gungeon comes with an easy recommendation. However, for those new to the series, it may be better to exit stage right.
